MacArthur (usa) went to vietnam, korea, phillipines, hawaii, tailand, indonesia before and during the war with japan. It was not just getting there - once they got there it was providing for an army that WAS there.
In the end the japanese didn't surrender to US presence that would have dragged on much longer the usa "was not winning the ground war" - they surrendered to "the bomb". They absolutely would not have surrendered anywhere near the time as far as the war at sea or ground was concerned.
WE CAN STILL WONDER if MacArthur was too hasty to support his east pacific bases to ignore alternatives to conflicts - perhaps operating bases on un-settled land "with or without permission" rather than supporting civil wars by freedom seekers
After all - MacArthur was not a man who was dispositioned to solve things by talk - he was going to have his bases he wasn't going to see a future of crossing that ocean again. He'd been through hell and back twice (WWII then Japan) and nearly got NUKED by Germany in the end. I doubt you could have convinced him to sit around and talk about protecting the USA.
