They had them so they could send information to their media contacts, so that they could in turn get "the scoop" on developing stories. They are all handsomely reimbursed for this access of course. That is the true pay to play. They are nothing but criminals.

The rules of the hearings are decided at the beginning by both republicans and democrats. They are amendments to the regular rules.
