NASCAR

Given that I hate basketball (college and pros) and that baseball doesn't get going for a couple of more months, my stop-gap (besides watching hockey occassionally) is NASCAR.

Anyone else a fan?

Anyone else think Dale Jr. is the Julian Lennon of racecar drivers?

Anyone else think Tony Stewart is an ass but that his flare-ups are one of the most entertaining parts of NASCAR?

Anyone else think a prominent driver is going to get killed this year because of the crappy tires NASCAR has been using?

Anyone else watching Daytona?

I don't follow it as much as I did years ago, but I like NASCAR. It's sorta hard to keep up with once the weather gets warmer and baseball starts... and once football starts, I almost forget about it. The season's too long, IMO. I used to root for Rusty Wallace, but since he's gone I find myself mainly just rooting against drivers I don't like (asswipes like Tony Stewart, mainly). I sorta root for Jeff Burton though, too. I also kinda like it when Jeff Gordon wins, not because I'm a fan, but becuase I know how much people hate him and it just makes me laugh.

As far as Dale Jr., I'm not a fan, but he seems like a nice enough guy, and I don't dislike him. He'll never achieve what his father did.

And Tony Stewart is a total dick.

I'd much rather watch short track races, but I plan to have the race on all afternoon. I sorta like the start of the NASCAR season when it's too cold to go outside and I can just hang in and watch the races. But I'm sure by the time the Pocono races come around, I'll sorta lose track of what's going on.

Used to be a huge fan - went to races in Richmond. My driver was Gordon (I know, but back in the day I fell in love with the rainbow car). Don't watch it nearly as much anymore, somehow lost its luster. All the drivers seem to be the same - slick, mentioning their sponsors over and over, even though they are right there on the car and the uniform. My driver now is Dale Jr. because he is so outside that mold - you never know what he'll say next! Also enjoy Tony...and cheer when Jimmy Johnson ends up in the wall. Anyway, it's good background noise if you get the chance for a Sunday afternoon nap. Then you can tune in just in time to see Nascar declare "track debris" and red flag the race for an exciting finish.

Used to be a fan, WAY back in the day (Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Baker, et. al.) when there were actual differences between the cars. Mopar guys could root against the Ford guys, e.g. Today's cars are all the same, so it's all about the drivers.

I agree. I remember when I was a kid it would be on in the background. Guys like Petty, Bobby Allison, AJ Foyt. The cars looked like something that someone just drove off of the lot. And the crashes.

Unfortunately with all the standardization, the restrictor plates, the "car of tomorrow," it's not as unpredictable as it used to be. It seems like the same four or five drivers dominate for the entire season versus anyone having a shot at winning.

Tony Stewart is already whining about tires and the first race hasn't even started. Hello Stewart?!? Everyboyd else is racing on the same tires! AND... That was your TEAMMATE that took you out in practice. Go figure.

He always makes these back-handed jibes like, "Yeah, it was my fault. I should have remembered the guy belongs racing trucks and I shouldn't have been that close to him" or some shit like that.

He's kind of like the John McEnroe of NASCAR.

Regarding the tire thing, Stewart may have a point in general (though I don't think he does in this instance since debris apparently took out Newman's tire). The Brickyard race last year was an embarrassment, with cars having to change tires every, what, 10 laps? And there was a road course a few weeks before that where the cars were fish-tailing and drifting like crazy because the tires had no grip whatsoever. I do think Goodyear hasn't been up to the requirements of the "Car of Tomorrow."

LOL!! That's a perfect comparison.
I used to watch Nascar and was a Dale Sr. fan, but I haven't watched a single race since he died.
June Bug isn't even a pimple on his dad's ass and i recently heard he's driving for the enemy now.

Well if you had to drive for some gold digger lady who basically cares more about herself then the Earnhardt family, you'd switch too. Teresa "beast" Earnhardt got what she deserved. She's such a bitch.

NASCAR is fake. Ever wonder why the championship race is the first race of the Season?

I was just going to say that NASCAR has become like pro-wrestling.
