How does a first time gun owner pick a “starter” gun?

Always wanted to get my own but the wife never allowed weapons in the house. Getting divorced so now I feel like nows a good time to get one. I’ve fired guns before with family in NC, but I’m not sure what would be a good “starter” gun.

12 gauge 20 inch cylinder choke riot gun carried by police in squad cars. With #1 buckshot it will stop any man alive. You can buy a 26 or 30 inch barrel for it to shoot skeet or trap targets Go to Greentop sporting goods down I-95 exit around mile marker 89 The back of the building faces I95 its just outside of Henrico in Hanover Co. they have a huge selection of new and used firearms the largest in Virginia, They also have plenty of handguns in the counters that are mobbed every time Democrats start talking about gun control. Get a used .38 revolver with a 4" barrel. They also have dozens of automatics used and new they take more training to be used and unloaded safely. You can look them up online and see what used guns are in stock also.

I hardly think a 12 gauge is the best choice for a beginner firearm.

I live with a mental, my state doesn’t permit guns to anyone if anyone in household has mental issues.
