The state of Pop music

I turned on the Grammy's tonight and was appalled at the caliber of musicianship that performs on and actually wins Grammy awards. IMHO we have reached an all-time low in music talent for pop. This is not to say there is no talent anymore and if you dig enough online you can find some, but there is definitely a problem in the popular music scene.

Oversinging, voice processors, lip syncing, baptist choirs to force applause, idiotic rapping, unable or unwilling to play solos on ANY instrument,etc...

Just wondering what you guys and gals think about this.

Does ANYONE believe that Kid Rock has a single gram of talent?

I've never watched the Grammy's.

It's the mainstream recording industry, not music.

Ignore all that shit.

The music industry wants to blame illegal downloading for its problems while ignoring the fact that it is slowly killing itself with outmoded thinking. The Grammy to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss is just the latest sign of how out of touch the music industry is with its audience. If they want to honor Plant, give him a lifetime achievement award. Don't throw a Best Album Grammy at celebrity tribute album.

I agree. He never got a Grammy throughout all those years with Zeppelin. The he records for 3 days with Allison Krauss and gets 5 Grammy's dumped on him.

How does Kid Rock even get nominated for best male vocal (or any other category)?
It hurt too much to even laugh at the "Rap Pack", Katy Perry trying to sing without pitch correction and the Jonas Brothers trying to jam with Stevie Wonder, lol.

5 Grammy's??? I never even heard of this album until this morning. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm guessing it's probably no Led Zeppelin II.

I made the mistake of watching a Robert Plant live show on some hi-def channel a few years ago. It was awful. He was playing all kinds of world music and shit, it was embarrassing. I mean this is the guy who wailed on The Immigrant Song, and now he's up there on stage with conga's and a harp player doing a reggae version of Misty Mountain Hop??? It was ridiculous.

So I'll be the first to say it: Fuck Robert Plant. Ever since that stupid Tall Cool One song his shit has been lame.

the first plant/page cd was some awesome shit, and it had all kinds of eastern intruments, oh btw, so did many of the classic led zeppelin songs. so not all the post-zep stuff is a massacre.

I have heard songs from the Plant/Krauss album. It isn't bad. But it is really a vanity project. No way should this thing have won all these awards.

I'm not knocking Zep's use of eastern instruments- I love psychedelic rock. They were able to incorporate stuff like sitars and woodwinds into their music and make original, awesome rock songs. The show I saw was anything but rock; it was basically him just butchering the Zeppelin catalog.

Pulling Names from a Hat: The 2009 Grammy Awards

[Mark Hoppus said it best: “Isn’t it great to see the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder back together again?”

After previous years were hindered by decrepit reality-show styled conceits (My Grammy Moment, anyone?), the producers for the Grammys decided to keep it simple for the 2009 edition of music’s most drawn-out glitz marathon: this time around, there would be no host and no games. Just three-and-a-half bloated hours of anemic performances and half-hearted, sometimes downright bizarre collaborations. If the Grammy Awards are really supposed to be “Music’s Biggest Night” (as its numerous ads have claimed), then what does the 2009 ceremony say about the state of sonic entertainment right now?

Not much, really.

OMG the Grammy's were on last night? Seriously, I had no idea. They've become such a joke anyway.

MTV killed music. People with talent are very rarely hot. But hot sells on TV. Musical 'talent' is easier to purchase than good looks so they outsource the music and have the sexy singers lip sync.

Go back and look at the great bands of the 60's and '70s. The truly great ones were butt ugly and would never have been allowed on MTV

Neh. That's an oversimplifcation. The Stones made several MTV videos, and there ain't nobody uglier than them.

Aerosmith just may nudge out The Stones in the ugly category of MTV.

Yeah, that would be a close race. I think the Stones win it though because they have an ugly double whammy: Mick and Keith. Aerosmith only has Steven.

Pop music is called pop music for a reason. It is what is culturaly significant at the time (what is popular). This doesnt mean it is artistic genious, it is the social adaptation of music of the times. There is genious and shit to be found in pop music. I'd like to think the genious is hidden behind the scenes, the people that know what "sounds good" (people who have been making/producing/performing music for their entire lives), as well as the musicians behind the records (look at dave weckl for example: recorded the Madonna album in the 80's and he is considered to be one of the best jazz drummers of all time). The shit resides in the "artist" themselves, people with no natural talent other then the studio magic that is given to them. I love pop music for what it is worth, something that sounds good should never be taken for granted, but it also shouldnt be considered anything but soulless corporate bullshit. That is to say, I respect pop for what it is, but I know what it isnt- art.
