motel tips
Posted by: low budget travel ()

The summer travel season has begun. Here are some tips for highway low budget motel comfort.

Buy a cheap universal remote control and keep it along with the code list in your luggage. The remotes in motels are filthy and often don't work.

You can cook soft boiled eggs in the coffee maker by placing two eggs in the pot and running the coffee maker through a cycle with water only.

Nonstick foil can be placed over the motel iron and the surface used for making grilled cheese or reheating pizza. To cook bacon with the iron cut the bacon in half and wrap with several layers of the foil, a disposable coffee cup can catch the grease out of one corner.

Bring some hand warmers and painters tape along so you can tape a handwarmer to the thermostat to make the air conditioner really cold.

A doorstop with built in alarm is nice to have to ensure nobody gets into your room while you sleep.

Any other tips?

I'll add on!

-99% of the time it is cheaper to book online. So if you're on the highway and need a last-minute room- best to grab your smartphone/laptop and book from there- if you walk in they will charge you rack (i.e. standard) rate with NO discounts!! This is how they make their money- the walk in last minute travler!

-hotels.com is great for that 10th free night if you travel alot- but be sure to check the hotel website directly sometimes they are cheaper!!

-read and heed the tripadvisor.com reviews!!! ESPECIALLY if there is any mention of bedbugs or crime in the area! It's worth it to pay another $20 a night to know you and your car will be in one piece in the morning....$20 more or a broken car window/lost luggage/lost sanity? Not to say ALL cheapies are bad, there will always be an element since it is- but you don't have to put up with bedbugs or stolen stuff just to save a few bucks....

-if you have kids- call it camping LOL. But DO take them to a cheap hotel a few times in their life. Not everyone in this world lives in luxury and kids need to learn this.

Hotels.com sucks a bag of dicks. Most everytime I have priced a room on there I find if I go directly to the hotel website I get a better price.

You cannot go wrong with a Hampton Inn. I have stayed in them across the country and they are always the same high level of quality & comfort for the price no matter where you are. No excitement, but no surprises either.

I agree, Hampton inn is the Buick of hotel chains. They are clean and comfortable but not flashy . I have driven cross country about 10 times and stayed at plenty of low end places for a 12 hour stopover but when I need serious rest I look for a Hampton.

If you get a jaccuzzi room be sure to fill flush and drain it before you get in.
Bad stuff can be trapped in those pumps.

Great thread... great tips

I would advise alway leaving 2-3 bucks and a note FOR MAID on the bed. Not only is it a nice thing to do and appreciated by a low paid worker... BUT MAINLY, if/when you leave something hanging in the closet, or on the back on the bath room door, you are more likely to get it back by an appreciative cleaning person... I have had them mail a nice belt and ties back before.

Of course with that said. If you are there for only a short time, dont unpack.

What you dont take out, you dont leave behind...

AND MAINLY LOOK IN THE CLOSET AND BEHIND THE BATTHROOM DOOR BEFORE LEAVING, dont forget stuff.

^^ And be sure to rent and ask for a discount on a room with a big, in room, jacuzzi!!! it helps relieve road blues. The later you check in the better the rate you can get.

AND YES!!! Fill that tub with ONLY the hot water spout, and run those jets for 5 minutes and drain the spoo wout... and then repeat that... yeah do it twice, and do it with the scald you skin hot, you are not in it, you are cleaning it.

PS
ALWAYS ASSUME they are watching with an in-room hidden camera. It is the way things are. It is not a big deal, just dont do anything, show any weapons, etc etc you dont want on camera.

It is ok to beat your meat for the camrea, no wants to see fat bald guy do that, but you might avoid counting your cash (other things you dont want to be seen) etc etc for the camera. If you have to do that, do it under covers like you did when you were a kid.

PPS
I like the universal remote for a road kit... that is a great idea.

The single bed rooms at microtel are freaky small. It is essentially half a motel room. They give you a normal size bathroom but the rest of the room is taken up by the king size bed with about 20 inches of clearance on either side of it. The rooms are so small that they have to mount the TV on a bracket over the closet. They put a wall to wall mirror at the head of the bed to make the room seem larger.

Probably a few thousand bucks apiece. Those look to be 78" or 84" diameter pipes, which cost about $450-$500 per foot.

Those pictures are of Das Parkhotel, which has two locations in Germany. http://www.dasparkhotel.net/

Top 10 Don't s When Staying in a Motel

1. Don't yell at the staff. Ever.

2. Don’t tell anyone your room number. (A desk agent should point to your room number, and not announce it to the world.)

3. Don't get bent out of shape when the night desk agent asks to see your “new friend’s” identification. Additionally, do not let a hotel employee into your room if they do not have an I.D.

4. Don't blame hotel staff for stealing your stuff. My personal experience is that the guests eventually find 99% of the items that guests report stolen from their rooms. However, it is your right to ask the manager to call the police to file a police report.

5. Don’t order from room service if you notice the pages are dirty and torn. Don’t order if the menu reads “Winter Menu” when it's spring.

6. Don’t use the bathroom washcloths to take off your makeup or shine your shoes.

7. Don't throw anything in the room garbage if you don't want the hotel staff to know about it, including insulin needles (or any needle) without properly disposing of it.

8. Don’t abuse the privilege of late checkout. If you really need one past 1:00 p.m., ask for the manager.

9. Don’t leave your luggage unattended in a hotel lobby – even for a second.

10. Don't be embarrassed! Call the hotel after you’ve checked out, and they will send your forgotten sex toys. Just like they would send your baby blanket back to you. Promise

Depends. I've frequently gotten good deals by walking in but you have to engage with the manager, and in your finer dumps (particularly at night), the manager isn't to be found. So low-paid desk guy could care less if there's one more empty room in the hotel that night - don't bother trying to work him.

These days, anybody with a smart phone and the Tripadvisor app should have no problems anywhere. Still helps to be able to spot a motel room door that's been kicked in at some point in the past, and mold or bedbugs. In real fleabags I used to ask to see the room before I paid, which paid off a couple of times.

Travel overseas is a whole new set of options and skills, but generally speaking you can find cheap accommodation that isn't a rat's nest, unlike here.

The motel maids sanitize everything before you check in, don't they?

No we do not.
We can tell by the smell and the contents of the trash exactly what went on in the room the night before.
I am cleaning a room now that had dope smoking and butt sex action last night.

If you want to fire one up in a non-smoking room bring a pipe with a lid and blow the smoke through a paper towel tube that is stuffed with dryer sheets. Blow into the bathroom exhaust or out a window if one is available. Or you can vape.

I just spent a night at a motel 6. Bubble TV, weak wifi, minifridge had half eaten walmart sub and two cans of country club malt liquor in it and used bar of soap was stuck to the bottom of the tub. Other than that it was fine.

The best of the motels (not part of a major chain!) in Fairfax County Proper (IMO) are:

1) wolf trap (vienna, VA)- usually around $75/night
2) budget host inn traveler's (Alexandria route 1 just past the beltway)- same price
3) Breezeway Motel (Fairfax VA)- same price
4) Budget inn (Falls Church, lee highway)- same price

I have personally stayed at each and can confirm they are clean and decent if you just want a place to sleep and get the fuck away from everybody.

However if you want a little more luxury it is worth paying $20 more a night for better amenities, as most of these older motels have bertha butt TV's still, limited wifi (wolf traps is great though!), and no pool, laundry, or a full breakfast.

About once a year I spend two nights at the wolftrap motel to take a break from my horrible life. I know that is sad and I am a loser but I enjoy those nights!

Yes you can, but you need to grind it up really fine- like into dust practically. Thing is those vapes were made for oils, not solids! It will work for a hot minute but eventually it WILL clog. I mean if all you can afford is the $20 tobacco pen might as well just save up and get the proper equipment.....

For ultimate stealth- go ahead and invest in a proper vape, like a magic flight box, g-pen (Snoop Dogg makes one too!), Pax, etc (google them).

Yeah it's ~$100 upfront to get a vape- but think about all the money you will save using less "herbs" and not having to run out and buy blunts all the time!!! Plus it truly works to keep the scent down, I'd vape it up in my grandmas bathroom I trust them that much!!! Just a little spray of ozium or any citrus spray or simply air it out for 2 minutes and no one will know the difference!

Skip Motel 6 and try the nearby Joe’s Motel. Rates at independently owned and operated motels are generally $10-$25 less per night. This is because independent properties do not have to contribute to national branding (advertising and marketing campaigns).
. In a prospective motel parking lot, I look for vehicles with out-of-state license plates mixed with local state plates. I consider it a great sign to see a variety of travelers and locals.

Here's one we used to do in high school. We would rent a room at the Charter House or the Howard Johnsons and pay cash of course. Before leaving we would put all the room furniture in the bathroom. We would tip the dresser so that when the door shut the dresser would slide down and wedge the door so it would not open. This would require the door having to be sawed in half in order to get in as the hinges are not accessible. The Brookfield Boys :)

Download the remote control app on your phone and NEVER touch the remote in the room as people jizz on them all the time.

If ammonia and bleach come into contact with each other, the chemical reaction produces a dangerous toxic gas. No joke.

Travelodge sleepy bear den rooms are really cool and well worth the extra 18 dollars. They include a stuffed bear that you can keep. Extra bears available for a small fee.

1) go to a hotel and do anything in private

2) ask before you leave if they have cameras in the rooms, answer is yes

3) go straight to courthouse. put your name address, hotel name address and name of their lawyer his name addres, and address of courthouse, and your complain they intruded on your privacy though you paid them, that filming people in their retirement hours is never part of any civil culture and against the law

4) hand it to the clerk

Howard Johnson has Crayola rooms for kids at some of their hotels. The Crayola rooms have a adjoining room with a lockout door for the adults so mom and dad can have a regular room.

Something I never knew until recently, in many of the big chain motels, pull the drawers out of the bureaus and look, there's always porn hidden in there.
