Every civilized country supports the fine arts...the fact that you dont appreciate the arts doesnt make it an unworthy expenditure of money. ANd as fas as pissing on the pope...go for it..he and the catholic church have been shitting on us.

Actually, I'd like to see the "Piss on the Pope" piece and I'm all for funding NEA, assuming the money is well appropriated once it gets there.

Actually, in the 1800s the government-backed Paris Salon only supported neo-Classical artwork like Ingres, excluding impressionist artists such as Monet, Manet and Renoir. And, don't even get into what kind of Art Nazi Germany supported and what kind of art it destroyed.

The government usually is not an arbiter of great art.

I agree that Gibbs speaks like a bumbling clod. For someone as eloquent as Obama, it's strange to me that he chose Gibbs as a spokesman.

Gibbs reminds me of Scott McClellan. Just answer the fucking question!

His dance around the Tom Daschle question was totally unnecessary. When a reporter asks you if any other candidates have tax problems, the answer is, "We are undergoing an extensive vetting process and I am not aware of any."

Plain and simple. If you can't answer that question, then make a point not to sit in on those discussions so you can answer that question.

Hell..I and any demnocrat need not be limited with some republikans definition of what a stimulus plan should consist of. The fact is after the republikans in the senate get finished with it the bill will be larger and contain some republikan as well as democratic foolishness in it. At least this money is being spent in the US rather then in Iraq...Japan..Korea...Germany...and who else knows where you republikans want to spend money chasing our "enemies".

The republikan argument has absolutely no rationale behind it. It isnt as if a dollar spent by the government stops there. A dollar of expenditure multiplies 5-6 times...and each expenditure after the initial govt expenditure is by consumers. But this time it's our consumers..not foreign ones. Want to decrease the debt you republikans have built up over in Iraq...bring the troops home...now!

Second guessing..cowardice republikans...who the fuck needs them anyway to pass a bill...not a democratic controlled congress...who will soon wake up that fact.

PS..."f" the pope before he and his priests "f" anymore children.

I actually like the Republican suggestion of the 4% mortgage rates and $15K credit for anyone who buys or refinances a house. Of course, that is a form of price control, so it is odd that it is coming from the "free market" Republicans.

There are lots of good ideas once people stop trying to take credit for them at someone else's expense. That seems to be the most important aspect of all republikan suggestions...make the dems look stupid and claim you saved the nation from people pissing on the pope.

Hey, now. Leave D-Lam out of this.

Pissing on the pope is impossible, as he'd shoot that lightning shit out of his hands at you as soon as you got close enough. That's assuming that Darth Vader didn't force choke you or cut you in half with his light saber on your way to the Emperor's throne room.

"But Shvarts reiterated Thursday that she repeatedly use a needleless syringe to insert semen into herself. At the end of her menstrual cycle, she took abortifacient herbs to induce bleeding, she said. She said she does not know whether or not she was ever pregnant.

“No one can say with 100-percent certainty that anything in the piece did or did not happen,” Shvarts said, “because the nature of the piece is that it did not consist of certainties.”

From the Village Voice when "artist" Andres Serrano's photos of his own feces were shown at Yvon Lambert, in New York, a few months ago.
_____________

Andres Serrano's 'Shit' Show

When the artist Andres Serrano had doubts about his latest project, he asked God for direction. "Just before I started to make these pictures, I had a moment of panic: What if I can't find beauty, diversity? What if they don't look good?" The first photograph he took was of his own poop, and when the film came back from the lab, "I realized I saw a face—actually a face—in it! A sign."

Serrano, wearing a pair of $1,000 Gianni Barbato boots—real shit-kickers— "I always said I wouldn't work with shit, so when I came up with this idea I had to put myself in a special place. I had to prepare myself mentally—it was a scientific and aesthetic investigation.
______________

Andres Serrano has been a recipient of funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. (15,000)

I wish I was smart enough to get the message that an artist is trying to convey through taking a shit on a plate.

"What if I can't find beauty and diversity in shit?"

Who cares? It's shit. Art involves having at least a shred of talent, and the only way I would ever appreciate this is if he got really drunk one day and made a bar bet with a buddy, "Dude, I can take pictures of my shit and people will say it's awesome. $50."

If he's not somewhere laughing at how stupid these "patrons of the fine arts" are, I'll be very disappointed.

Art isn't just about beauty and diversity. It can be something that makes you pause for a second and think it.
You may not see the beauty in shit because you see it everyday, at a distance in your toilet. But if you not an observant person and had never seen it before up close, you would probably see some shit in an art gallery somewhere and marvel at it's many textures and colors (especially it there was corn or crayons involved).
Already, it's made you think about it's value as art and caused this discussion, so it must have some merit.

Also, it can be all in the eye of the beholder. For example, I think electric guitars are one of the most beautiful things on earth, but many of my friends see no beauty in them at all. To them, they're just painted blocks of wood, but to me they have exquisitely carved bodies with curves and lines, a smooth texture that makes me want to touch it all over, an amazing blend of earthy organics and modern technology that blends color, form and function into one device the can turn from baby to beast in one brief moment, leaving it's employer breathless and in heavenly bliss.

Having said that, I do NOT believe THIS is art at all.

I've stared down many interesting dumps, like the one that came out bright green after I ate some of that Blue Monster ice cream. I marveled at the color and examined it in detail from 5 feet away, but not once did the words "beauty" or "diversity" cross my mind.

I understand the premise behind his exhibit, but putting this in the same category as, say, the Sistine Chapel is almost blasphemous. Maybe he should go try to find beauty and diversity in the cancer ward of a children's hospital; there's actually something to be found there.

Gone quiet....I just happened to have something to do besides sit on here all day. You all can pick at all the controversial stuff "artists" are capable of producing..but at the end off the day...99% of what is funded is very main stream...and very important to fund. Using these examples to dredge up to sabotage the positive art can add to society is wrong. Typical republikan propaganda technique...bull shit.

Art is subjective. Just because you don't think something is art doesn't mean others might not think it is art.

I would never admire a "self-portrait in shit" myself, but if some idiot thinks it is art, who am I to say he is wrong or that it shouldn't be called art by those idiots?

I understand pushing the envelope in what is acceptable in art, but come on. If I decided to not bathe or clean my house or anything and called it an artistic expression of the laziness of American middle-class society, is it art, or am I just a dirty bastard?

Maybe I'm just an unenlightened Philistine, but I still maintain that art should demonstrate talent and creation, not just pointing at some random thing and saying, "hey, what about this? This could be art, right? Ever think about that?"

I even accept things like, "Dip a tennis ball in paint and hit it at a canvas" or "paint myself blue and swing face first into a wall" as art. Making a crucified Jesus Christ out of shit is STILL within my limits for what is art. Taking a picture of a dump you just took is not art; I took a picture of a particularly impressive turd back in 2004, but that doesn't make me an artist.
