The nod heard 'round the world.

Seriously, what's the big stink about that marching band dude that nodded at the president during the president's inauguration parade?

I understand bearing and discipline, but the freaking president waved at you during one of the most historic inauguration's in the country's life; what's the damage?

Obviously you don't understand bearing and discipline.

I wasn't aware that kilt-wearing marching band leaders were expected to exhibit the same lack of emotion that military members are.

Wearing the kilt represents something just the same. So he pretty much dishonored his family clan or whatever the kilt he was wearing represented.

And trust me, bearing and discipline have nothing to do with emotion. It's self control and self respect.

I was in the military. I know what bearing and discipline are. I still don't understand why his career is over because of this. It wasn't a big, showy display or anything.

How about the kid from VMI that clearly did a side glance over to the reviewing stand.

Bet he gets a few demerit points. Hope he wasn't a Rat.

I get the impression this was the final straw with the dude. If you see photos of him, he looks like kind of a spazoid. They were probably just tired of dealing with him.

He was some kind of fireman and I saw an interview with him. I don't think he gives a shit one way or the other. He wasn't playing an instrument, he was just marching along and when the president looked at him, he waved and winked at him.
In most marching bands, this represents a violation of the most golden rule.

I played drums, so I was too far in the back to tell what the people in front were doing. What golden rule are you talking about?

The reason I'm asking is because it's been on the front page of Yahoo for the past 4 days, like it's a huge deal or something.

Do unto others as they do unto you.

Ok, so Obama acknowledges him, he acknowledges Obama...

Is there a different, more marching band-y golden rule I'm not aware of?

Yes. Marching bands were started by the military and as such, the same discipline applies. You're supposed to be stone faced, and strong so as to represent whatever organization your marching for. Winking and waving is just about the worst thing you can do in a marching band.

Having said that, I could give a shit what the guy did, but I can also understand why the guy got sacked.
