The War on Women Continues ... Medicare Payments and Doctors

Oh oh. Somebody has some splainin' to do. While the federal government makes the same payment for Medicare services, apparently on the other side of things, the medical industry appears to be severely underpaying women doctors. Why does the medical industry have such a huge pay gap in this example?

When can president Obama appear in the rose garden to address this issue? Hopefully ASAP!

******

The diagnosis: a serious case of medical gender gap.

Male doctors on average make 88 percent more in Medicare reimbursements than female physicians, according to an analysis of recently released government data, which suggests that the gender of a medical provider could play a role in the number of services they provide patients.

The NerdWallet research found that male physicians on average were paid $118,782 in Medicare reimbursements by the federal government in 2012, compared with $63,346 for women doctors.

The difference is particularly striking because Medicare—the government's health insurance program for people 65 and older—pays men and women doctors the same amount for the individual services they perform on patients in the same geographic area.

Oh, one last thing. How long until the Republicans get blamed for this situation?

If you read your own article DDD, the answers are right there. Male doctors see more patients and perform more procedures that result in higher billings. A superficial but equally unfair conclusion from the article might be that female doctors are more into providing good patient care, male doctors are more into providing care which maximizes their financial return.

By Dem logic, shouldn't a percentage of the male MD compensation be transferred to the female doctors?

It is, after all, income inequality right?

The male doctors like to sexually take advantage of the Medicare patients. They think they are too stupid to understand wrong from right and too insecure to tattle...

Thanks. Yes, I realized that there was an answer within the article itself. But, NBC (Nothing But Crap) was the one to utilize a more dramatic headline for the news.

Are you having delusions again? I don't seem to recall that conservatives have had any recent focus on "spreading the wealth around."

Maybe you should have a look in the mirror for your answer.

Please tell me which politician has advocated that; "...a percentage of the male MD compensation be transferred to the female doctors?"

Let me provide the correct answer for you. YOUR party has been on a "war on women" tirade for the past several years. Nothing but vote pandering. Yet, we keep hearing more and more of pay disparity and all your party does is keep politicizing it for their attempted gain. Yet, their offices are some of the biggest abusers.

I didn't imply that a Liberal specifically advocated anything - but, again, as a WHOLE, your party just loves to politicize and pander.

No denying that. It's a fact, Jack!

Really? Who is really waging the real war on women? Read and weep. Just the facts! Lib-Brainless-Tardz LoLz!

In his SOTU address, Barack Obama once again pretended that he cares about equal pay for women. This all started back in 2008, when then presidential candidate Barack Obama accused John McCain of a war on women and how McCain did not believe in equal pay. A study of the Senate offices of both men actually proved that Obama routinely underpaid women, whereas, John McCain actually paid women more than men:

On average, women working in Obama’s Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That’s according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama’s Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one — Obama’s administrative manager — was a woman.

The average pay for the 33 men on Obama’s staff (who earned more than $23,000, the lowest annual salary paid for non-intern employees) was $59,207. The average pay for the 31 women on Obama’s staff who earned more than $23,000 per year was $48,729.91. (The average pay for all 36 male employees on Obama’s staff was $55,962; and the average pay for all 31 female employees was $48,729. The report indicated that Obama had only one paid intern during the period, who was a male.)

McCain, an Arizona senator, employed a total of 69 people during the reporting period ending in the fall of 2007, but 23 of them were interns. Of his non-intern employees, 30 were women and 16 were men. After excluding interns, the average pay for the 30 women on McCain’s staff was $59,104.51. The 16 non-intern males in McCain’s office, by comparison, were paid an average of $56,628.83.

Despite an electorate that is overwhelmingly pro-choice, there is no doubt that the GOP’s first goal is to deprive women of their reproductive rights and to frame that argument not as one of health but religion. It is in fact so important an issue to the GOP that out of some 40,000 laws of all types enacted in 2011, as RMuse wrote here recently, “there were nearly 1,000 bills in state legislatures to restrict a woman’s right to legal abortion services” (up from 950 in 2010). Alternet lists the 10 worst states in which to be a woman. The lone piece of good news was the unexpected sanity of Mississippi voters. Interestingly, the GOP is now trying to co-opt the War on Women for their own, accusing liberals of waging war on “pro-choice” women, or declaring that Obama is waging a war on women and that the Obama White House has been a hostile work environment. This is while Congress, already in 2012, has taken no less than eight votes against women – in just three months. It is frightening to think what the final toll might be by December 31.
