Realtor wants to make copy of my apartment key?
Posted by: MdWu6 ()

I have a month left on my lease. The apartment is managed by a realty company who is trying to find another renter. One lady there I know has a key to the apartment, because she has had two people over the last week. Plus, a kitchen contractor came over, so she has a key. This other person from the realty company is calling and emailing me to get a copy of the key so he can show the apartment to people. Why can't get just get a copy of the key from the woman at the same company? His signature says he is the "office manager," not really a realtor I guess? He sounds younger and his emails aren't written as well. Not sure what is going on.

Don't do it. Between homes and settlements, I had to take on a townhome rental for 2 months. The first month was peaceful, but the 2nd month was chaos. A few people each day were being shown the place and I felt like there was little privacy. Plus, there was a Saturday evening when I had just gotten home and took out my wallet, some loose cash, etc. and set it down on the chair. The potential buyers came through with the agent and after they left, I realized all the loose bills ($20 or less) that I had previously placed on the chair were missing.

Tell them to work around your peace and privacy and they can do their work after you've vacated.

You say the property manager/realtor is E-MAILING you with this request? Uh yeah...I'm ignorin' that shit. There are ample copies of your key floating around out there, he can get one of those.

Here is the email

Hope you are well and ready for the weekend.

I have left you a couple voice mails about obtaining a copy of your key so that we can schedule with your approval showings of the space.

Please advise when I can come by to pick up your key to make a copy or if you can make one for me. Thank you.

Then again..

Can you please let me know when a good time to come by to pick the keys up to make a copy?

What kind of shithole apartment are you living in that the prop. mgr. is asking YOU for a key? Why don't they have their own key? Every place I've ever rented, management has their own key. I would ignore them...if you have a face-to-face, just tell them you've been having problems with your cell phone (which is what you read your e-mail on, too).

Their lack of a key does not constitute an emergency on your part. It sounds like you're close to moving out so, they'll get "their" key at that time.

It sounds unprofessional. He should already have a real estate agent to direct the inquiries to. As you said, that person already has a copy of the key. If she's on vacation, she should have an assistant or a fellow broker who can cover for her. He should've left it at the voice mails and not followed up with an e-mail.

Something is not right here. If this were just a matter of convenience for them, they would have gone and made a copy of the key they already had or arranged for a locksmith when the tenant did not respond right away. If they are following up with you, that means there is a reason they want your particular key.

There are only two innocent explanations here. The first is that there is some power struggle going on at the realty company, perhaps an effort to control who might get the commission. The second is that the person asking for the key lost his copy, and having to go back to the company for another would put him in an awkward situation. Either way it isn't the tenant's problem. A more sinister explanation is that the realty company wants to get hold of the tenant's key so that they can force him out early.

Well, what did you expect? Most leases have a clause that allows the place to be shown to potential renters. That usually happens during normal working hours on weekdays and on weekends. Yes, it can be inconvenient, but if you signed a lease with that clause, then too bad.

Ok, I had a few emails back and forth yesterday with the realtor.. it turns out they don't have a key to the apartment and haven't been able to show it. The person Wendy is just the person who sets up the appointments or something so she never actually showed the apartment. I guess they didn't want to let me know that or something.
