We have a guy who screwed up on his taxes because the tax code is too convoluted. Maybe it will actually be simplified now.

That's just a false statement. He did pay his taxes. He didn't account for the part of the taxes that are normally paid by employers. Even though this was explained to him by the IMF, the fact is he hadn't worked as an independent contractor before, so it isn't surprising he was unsure of what to do, even with the IMF's explanation. He is guilty of being dumb enough to do this stuff without a CPA or tax attorney.

When he was contacted by the IRS, he paid the portion that the IRS said was due. There is a statute of limitations of three years on what the IRS can collect. Technically speaking, he didn't have to pay the prior year taxes and penalties. Any good CPA or tax attorney would tell him not to worry about it since the IRS didn't ask for it. I seriously doubt anybody on this forum would have volunteered to pay for those years, either.

It is. The evasion wasn't intentional. If the IRS had determined it was, it would have taken stronger action.

Go ahead. That's not what Geithner did. I will laugh if you end up in jail.
