Casual marijuana use linked to brain changes

Karen Weintraub, Special for USA TODAY 6:46 p.m. EDT April 15, 2014

A new study links casual marijuana use with significant changes to parts of the brain.

Using marijuana a few times a week is enough to physically alter critical brain structures, according to a new study published Tuesday in The Journal of Neuroscience.

"Just casual use appears to create changes in the brain in areas you don't want to change," said Hans Breiter, a psychiatrist and mathematician at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, who led the new study.

There is actually very little research on the potential benefits and downsides of casual marijuana smoking — fewer than four times a week on average.

In his study, done in collaboration with researchers at Harvard University, scientists looked at the brains of 20 relatively light marijuana users and 20 people who did not use it at all. All 40 were college students in the Boston area.

The study found volume, shape and density changes in two crucial brain areas — the nucleus accumbens and the amygdala — involved with emotion and motivation and some types of mental illness. "This is a part of the brain you do not want to mess around with," Breiter said.

The more marijuana the students smoked, the more their brains differed from the non-users, the study found.

The brain continues to develop well into the 20s, and even into the 30s, said Breiter, who is concerned about the long-term impacts of marijuana use on the developing brain.

Staci Gruber, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the research, said Breiter's findings are consistent with her own, although she has focused on somewhat heavier users.

"There have been a growing number of studies that suggest that marijuana use in emerging adults is associated with differences in brain structure and cognitive abilities," said Gruber, also the director of Cognitive and Clinical Neuroimaging Core at McLean Hospital outside Boston. "I'm not saying (pot smoking) is analogous to shooting heroin or cocaine, but it's also not quite the benign substance people thought it was."

Responding to a study that found a decline in IQ points among people who used marijuana regularly, Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, told USA TODAY recently that people should be more aware of these potential brain impacts.

"Perhaps it would be better if ... there was a little bit more recognition of that particular consequence," he said.

I can't count the number of debates I've had with libtards who support weed legalization where I reveal to them that weed lowers IQ and causes mental illness and cancer. They always say that I'm completely full of shit and that smoking weed is actually good for people. This is yet more proof that the degenerate pro-drug D Baggers are fucking up our race by pushing drug use. Likewise for the growing legions of faux-conservative libertarians and moderate Republicans.

Drugs kill or ruin the lives of one famous celebrity after the next. And it's obvious to anyone who's ever been around drug users that their brains have been damaged. Drug use is obviously harmful for individuals and society. Yet the tidal wave of pro-drug propaganda sweeping across the West is only gaining in strength. It's only a matter of time before we become as fucked up as Afghanistan.

I smoked up plenty. As did most of my friends. I like the stuff generally. But no way that I'd even start to try to argue that it doesn't have some fairly obvious and sometimes significant effects particularly among heavy users. You'd have to either be blind or in complete denial not to see it.

That said, I'm still for decriminalization. The way were doing it now just causes more problems than it solves.

It really gets to you after a while. It made me paranoid, delusional, emotionless, boring. It was like I was living in my own black/white world when I smoked everyday.

That's all bullshit, Big Pharma, Anheuser-Busch and Big Tobacco just don't want you to have ANY fun.....

No one has EVER died from a marijuana "overdose"...

Unlike tobacco smoke, which is carcinogenic, weed smoke is perfectly good for your lungs. There is NOTHING wrong with taking 40-50 B-loads a day and holding them in your lungs.

Weed is totally good for your head too. Great for concentration, logic and reasoning.

I seriously recommend that young people get as much weed as they can, and smoke as much and as often as they can afford.

Being in love changes your brain. Driving a car changes your brain. Having sex changes your brain. The brain is a fluid living organism, it is supposed to chnage.

Please try to stop being so stupid and please stop saying so many stupid things.

Lets focus on the truly deadly drugs first. Alcohol for example is poison and will kill you. My conservative friends are quite correct that drugs kill - drugs like alcohol. Marijuana may have some yet unproven negative impact on the body but the jury is in on alcohol - it kills and mames.

So if genuine (and I know its not) the concern of conservatives should be outlawing alcohol much like marijuana is outlawed in most places. Get caught with or selling alcohol and do some hard time. Id say 10 year minimum for a case or more of hard liquor and something like a year a six-pack/bottle of wine for the less potent stuff.

Get real about saving our youth conservatives. Get real about alcohol.

That's all BULLSHIT man...

Prohibition was NOT the cure, it made things WORSE...

Ever since alcohol was legalized, it has been HARDER for young people to get because there are better controls..

Education and prevention programs have been hugely successful too!

I mean, really... No one dies of cirrhosis and DWI's are pretty rare now that alcohol is legal.

I used to be very pro-marijuana. Not anymore. There are a very small handful of people with very high IQ's and strength that can use marijuana without much harm. Usually computer guys, they are unemotional which helps too. However had they never smoked marijuana they could have been like Steve Jobs. It kills your fight.

Remember Amanda Bynes? That was marijuana in an already screwy girl.

You never forget how wonderful it feels and a part of you is constantly craving to experience that again and everything else in life seems to not compare.

It raises the schizophrenic centers in your brain and makes it spin a million miles a minute yet you're ability to speak is greatly hindered.

Strong marijuana too often turned me into Natalie Portman in The Black Swan just about a few years ago. It was very scary and terrible for my family.

You actually look much uglier after smoking too much pot.

Potheads are all assholes and never true friends except for small groups of buddy guys who can't get laid and hate women.

After saying that and I could say way more but my brain and attention span is too fried I still crave it- It becomes a natural urge just like sex.

So what? There's plenty of stuff that's way worse for you and legal too. Marijuana should be sold right by liquor in ABC stores. There's no good reason for it NOT to be. You contards are just brainwashed into thinking weed is some sort of devil drug.

They are only for less regulation when it comes to corporate profitability in the face of protecting health and the environment.

When it comes to the liberty and regulating the personal lives of individuals. They are the biggest big government police state fascists this world has ever known.

bitch is getting harvard / democrat money to defame others so the gov looks good kicking heads and walking all over people

and the alcohol bitch ? the improperly prescribed meds bitch ?

give my damn money back for the school loan and grant studies how about ?

---------------------------
in the 80's we found out gov lied when they said they'd done research proving small ammounts of marajuana were worse than equivalent ammounts of alcohol

in the 90's we found out the brain does heal, that the damage was no more permanent than for alcohol was permanent

in the 2000's we found out harvard is intently mis-educating judges to favor gov in all persuits (after warnings by scholars to stop persisting to do so, in their own library), importing illegals to sign loans, allowing illegals channels to control gov funds grants, etc etc

what next harvard ? did you want to tell me about another "study" ?

let me get online maybe if i get a gov job i can afford to order some

You are, as always, an idiot.

There are as many if not more Republicans advocating for decriminalization than there have been Demwits.

Until he retired a few years back, the major supporter and only one who'd ever submitted a bill re decriminalization in the VA legislature was a Republican.

Republicans had a presidential candidate who ran almost entirely on a platform for decriminalizing.

Dems on the other hand including Obama's own DOJ are the ones shutting down the clinics in CA and enforcing Federal actions against people in more permissive states.

Here is what SUGAR does to your brain

"Overeating, poor memory formation, learning disorders, depression – all have been linked in recent research to the over-consumption of sugar. And these linkages point to a problem that is only beginning to be better understood: what our chronic intake of added sugar is doing to our brains." http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2012/04/01/what-eating-too-much-sugar-does-to-your-brain/

Should we send people to jail for selling this stuff?

We need to cut the crap. Pot is damaging. BTW so are alcohol, tobacco and a number of legal food products. The reason for legalizing pot has nothing to do with it being harmless or safe. The reason for legalizing pot is because the cost to society from outlawing it has proven to be far greater than the cost to society from its use.

POLICE: MAN ATE POT CANDY BEFORE SHOOTING WIFE
BY SADIE GURMAN
ASSOCIATED PRESS

Apr 17, 11:17 PM EDT

DENVER (AP) -- A Denver man accused of killing his wife while she was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher ate marijuana-infused candy before the attack, according to search warrants released Thursday.

Denver police are investigating if the pot influenced his behavior and also whether officers responded quickly enough to pleas for help from the woman, who was shot to death 12 minutes into the 911 call she made Monday.

Officials said Thursday that a dispatcher has been placed on paid leave during the investigation.

Kristine Kirk, 44, told dispatchers her husband bought and ate the marijuana candy and may have also taken prescription pain pills before he started hallucinating and frightening the couple's three children, the warrants state.

She pleaded with dispatchers to hurry and send officers because her husband, Richard Kirk, 47, had asked her to get a gun and shoot him. She said he was talking about the end of the world and she was "scared of what he might do."

Richard Kirk could be heard in the background of the 911 call talking about the candy he legally bought from one of Denver's pot dispensaries earlier that night, and surveillance footage from the shop captured the transaction, police said.

Detectives found a receipt for items such as "Karma Kandy Orange Ginger."

A detective who interviewed Richard Kirk after the killing noted that he appeared to be on drugs, based on his speech and inability to focus, according to the warrants. Police said he was rambling and confessed to killing his wife.

Investigators were analyzing blood samples to see whether he was under the influence of any other substances.

Richard Kirk does not remember anything of the incident, his brother, Lance Kirk, told KUSA-TV Thursday.

"He's hurting. He's hurting real bad," Lance Kirk said.

Authorities have said Richard Kirk shot his wife in the head about 12 minutes into her call with 911, after she frantically told dispatchers her husband was getting a gun from a safe.

Police Chief Robert White held a news conference Thursday but refused to provide details about the shooting or the internal investigation, nor would he say whether he thought officers took too long to respond.

"This is an ongoing investigation, and I just cannot get into anything that would remotely compromise it," he said. "Obviously something went wrong because somebody lost their life."

Officials have not released the 911 call or dispatch records publicly, but the search warrants offer new glimpses into Kristine Kirk's panicked final moments. Dispatchers could hear her telling her husband to stay down and yelling for her three young boys to go upstairs.

"At one point she tells the 911 operator to `please hurry' because he was scaring the kids and he was `totally hallucinating,'" the documents say.

Moments later, Kristine Kirk sounded "panicked" as she told dispatchers her husband was retrieving a gun from a safe.

"She next related that he had the gun and she did not know where to go," the warrants say. Within a few seconds, dispatchers could hear her screaming. There was a single gunshot before the line went quiet.

Officers arrived just after the shooting and found her dead of a gunshot wound to the head.

The Denver Police Department has struggled with slowing response times in recent months as the number of officers has decreased due to retirements, departures and budget cuts that kept the department from hiring for five years.

Disagreement exists about the reasons for the delays. The police union has said White's staffing changes and sweeping reorganization of the department have worsened the problem. White denied that claim Thursday and said he expects response times to improve as newly hired officers hit the streets.

This. Like I said earlier: it should be sold in ABC stores, right alongside liquor.

When this happens, GET OFF THE FUCKING PHONE AND RUN.

Yeah, I saw the tree falling on me, so I called 911. The cops didn't respond in time though and it hit me.
