Byrd: The new Washington war machine

BY MATTHEW BYRD | APRIL 08, 2014 5:00 AM
SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Sometimes the news is just so drearily awful that you have to sit back and almost appreciate the pure comedy induced by it.

Take this item from Washington, Iowa, where the local police have recently acquired an MRAP vehicle (short for Mine Resistance Ambush Protected) through a Defense Department program that donates excess vehicles originally produced for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to local police departments across the United States, including other Iowa towns such as Mason City and Storm Lake.

The MRAP weighs an impressive 49,000 pounds, stands 10-feet tall, and possesses a whopping six-wheel drive. Originally designed to resist landmines and IEDs, it sure seems like the MRAP will come in handy for the notorious war zone otherwise known as Washington County, Iowa.

If you’re having a bad day, I highly recommend watching a video produced by the Des Moines Register in which Washington police officials try to justify the possession of a vehicle it clearly has no use for. The excuses range from school shootings (which are an actual concern but an MRAP seems like overkill) to a terrorist attack happening in central Iowa (because if there’s any place that seems ripe for a high-profile terrorist attack it’s Washington, Iowa, population 7,000).

I mean if the police were realistic, they could come up with actual reasons to use their MRAP/machine of doom. Drunken high-school house parties could be broken up by ramming the MRAP into the side of the building. Clearly, people who have been trying to curtail underage drinking have not seriously considered the serious deterrents to slamming down a few Hamms in your parents’ house caused by a soulless war machine demolishing your kitchen.

In all seriousness however (and it is hard to be serious about a situation so absurd) this little anecdote does highlight several disturbing trends in the American cultural landscape. Most blatantly, the collective paranoia that’s gripped post-9/11 America so tightly that small-town Iowa police officers are convinced that, any minute, the whole state could become engulfed in some Red Dawn-style conflict that would require the use of a device such as the MRAP.

But, a little more subtly, this incident reflects the out-of-control militarization of the police that’s been occurring across small towns and big cities from Los Angeles to Waterville, Maine.

As Radley Balko, the author of the book The Rise of the Warrior Cop, an expose of the police militarization of the last decade, found, in 2006 alone the Pentagon, “distributed vehicles worth $15.4 million, aircraft worth $8.9 million, boats worth $6.7 million, weapons worth $1 million and “other” items worth $110.6 million to local police agencies.”

The effects of cops moving from handguns to assault rifles and being equipped with tanks, bazookas, and Kevlar has been twofold. First, civil liberties have absolutely been eroded, with police-brutality rates skyrocketing in last decade according to the Justice Department. Not only that, but, with the influx of military gear into local police forces, cops begin to view themselves as soldiers whose main job is combat rather than keeping the peace. How else can you explain the rise in police shootings since 9/11?

But hey, the sheriff gets to ride around in a sweet new MRAP and pretend he’s Rambo so, you know, let’s call it a draw.

FAIR WARNING POLICE- Not all of you can hide in these things and when you start abusing citizens of this country with this miltary shit you are going to have to live deal with the consequences and it is not going to be pretty for "either side".

THE PEOPLE have greater numbers and more guns than anyone else, and the people do not have regulations. One might suggest not pissing off the people off too much.

Close enough, it has a turret, is armoured and is designed to mass kill in a military enviroment. Local Police departments in America DO NOT need these. The Police are just begging for trouble, and they will probably get it.

You don't need this kind of stuff until you need it.

Crazy crime rampages can strike anywhere.

If it is excess stuff, and a small community put in a bid for it, good for them.

So I wouldn't say it is a bad idea from the "where" perspective.

However, from the "why" perspective, to the extent that it is used as a furtherance of a police state, and used to enforce smaller-type, aka "victimless" crimes, and not rampaging death, then yes, it might be seen as problematic.

The MRAP is not a tank, and it's not used to "mass kill", LOL. It's designed for crew protection and survivability.

A lot of these police departments are getting these free, as the military is downsizing and doesn't know what to do with all the surplus vehicles.

An MRAP is more combat capable than many foriegn tanks out there. It can resist impact much greater than can many tanks available in the world.

It is the most armored and impact withstanding vehicle in the world. So Eesh is playing on words and a police state fascist.

There is pretty much no difference in the armor the police have in an MRAP vs a full blown tank in an urban setting.

They can drive that MRAP through any wall and can withstand explosions and any caliber gun fire.

The thing has been designed to run over a high power IED and retain its structural integrity.

No Gerry, you don't know what you are talking about. An MRAP is simply a wheeled vehicle that is resistant against IEDs and RPGs. Tanks are tracked vehicles with steel and ceramic armor that can resist fire from tank and artillery rounds.

You're right and I humbly apologize for my oversight. I'd merely
copied the story line that provided the link. Expecting Gerry

You had to look up what an RPG was, didn't you? You thought it meant role playing game, hahahaha.

Anyway, the choice RPG of insurgents and terrorists is the Soviet RPG-7, and the Chinese and North Korean knockoffs. That RPG was designed long before there was such a thing as ceramic, composite, and explosive reactive armor available for tanks.

A simple RPG will not kill any tank designed in the past 40 years. It is enough to take out a Humvee or any light armored truck.

All Police departents have machine guns. What rock have you been living under?

ANYONE who thinks giving these tanks to local LE is a good idea is an idiot.

Cop use every weapon/toy they have. Most cops are mentally ill and love torture. As children most cops were abused and then grew up being abusers, starting with the family cat/dog and moving on to a job where they can abuse humans. Giving them miltary grade hardware will not end well.

Yup, they come back form war zones and get jobs as cops.

Anyone paying attention to what cops have been doing, getting more and more blood thirsty, killing more and more people every year. It is getting scary.

I more fear getting killed by the police than anyone else and I am a law abiding boring, average, non drinking, non drug doing, but the Police scare me. The yhave made not wearing a seat belt a crime and when thery pull you over for that they give you the third degree. It is scary. Cops are scary.

I just watched them light up a 72 year old senile man in a van for evasion yesterday on liveleak. There is a video of them executing an unarmed homeless man in the hills of Arizona too for no reason at all.

And they just get away with it. This is recent, within the last couple of weeks.

Wrong, A 20mm will go through it or burn the vehicle with fire. It will become an oven and they will have to exit at some point or be cooked.

LOL!!!!!

Give me a WWII M4 Sherman tank (a comparably average tank in the war) and you take the MRAP. Let see how much that armor takes a 76mm shell! Hell, that armor wouldn't even slow down a sabot round (which is pretty much a standard round everywhere since the 70s, but invented in the late 40's/early 50's). You just don't know what you are talking about.

The only tank an MRAP could take on would be WWI model, armed only with machine guns. The armor isn't designed to withstand anything more than HE and large caliber (up to 50 cal) bullet fire. The only thing the MRAP was designed to do was to survive IED blasts that were killing our troops in Iraq. It doesn't even normally have a main armament.

All the MRAP is, is a modern wheeled US military APC (Armored personnel carrier), something we were lacking, before Iraq. The only APC around that could conceivable (but not really) stand up to a tank would be a M2 Bradley IFV. Even then, it would use it's TOW missiles, for it's kill, not it's main gun.

The only difference between MRAPs and normal police APCs are two things. An explosive resistant undercarriage/side armor and the ability to withstand 50 caliber rounds. Why do the police need them???

These things are sitting in depots all around the country rusting (i've seen them). It makes sense (from pure logistical reasons) to give these things away rather than have police spend money on "commercial" APCs. Let them pay the costs to maintain them.

These things sit all year round rusting and leaking fluids into the soil on these bases, in fields. They are not being constantly maintained in covered conditions, as I am sure you believe.

It just makes sense to give them these things. Now as to what they do/will use them for is a different and separate matter.

No, they won't.They'll be used as often as possible in all kinds of paramilitary bullshit exercises. You think you can give cops toys like these and not expect them to use 'em?

Fuck the justification, service and maintenance on these vehicles is exclusive and outrageously high --- courtesy of Bob A. Taxpayer.

"The charges are generally cylindrical, fabricated from commonly available metal pipe, with the forward end closed by a concave copper or steel disk-shaped liner to create a shaped charge. Explosive is loaded behind the metal liner to fill the pipe. Upon detonation, the explosive projects the liner to form a projectile.

Effects of traditional explosions like blast-forces and metal fragments seldom disable armored vehicles, but the explosively formed solid copper penetrator is quite lethal —even to the new generation of mine-resistant vehicles (which are made to withstand an anti-tank mine), and many tanks".

EFP = explosive formed projectile (look it up in Wikpedia)

Costs about $3 to make and will take out and MRAP.

Stock up now while supplies last
