Is it worth the 7+ hr drive?

Main area of interest will be smokey mountains...

It is cool down there. Be sure to check out the foothills parkway and fontana dam. Lots of mountain biking and fishing in that area if you are into that.

If you're in the area and your money's burnin a hole in your pocket, the Harrahs Cherokee Casino is worth a visit. About an hour-long scenic drive from Knoxville. Not really a traditional "spring break" type place, but they have an indoor pool where you can leave your kids while you're out blowing their college funds. They also have free soda fountain machines in the casino, so if you start losing your shirt you can always drown your sorrows with a nice big cup of free ice-cold pepsi, on the house. Worth checking out if you want to drive deep into the Smokey Mountains, it's a beautiful area. There's also some kind of amusement park near there in Maggie Valley.

Very pretty area if you like the outdoors.

Don't go for the nightlife.

Meh. Is Richmond any good? About the same level of town.

I'm sure that you could find things to do if you were headed through and had to be there, but not sure that I'd go out of my way.

The more interesting things in that area to me are outdoor and little quirky out of the way places that you run across.

It's a beautiful area. About as remote and rugged as it gets here on the east coast. Gatlinburg's a real touristy resort town, worth checking out for a day. Clingman's Dome is another point of interest, one of the highest points in the east, but you can almost drive up to it and walk to the top, where there's a big scenic overlook. The drive thru Cherokee and Maggie Valley is really nice too, a lot of little motels and attractions along the way. I remember some roadside place where American Indians were making jewelry, big stuffed bears, etc- that kind of stuff.

It's worthwhile trip if you've never been to that part of the country and like to see the great outdoors.

Knoxville has a pretty decent night life and Tennessee overall has the smoothest roads in the country.

Might check out Asheville and surrounding area. Search Biltmore mansion and see if that's something that the wife might like. Golf and spas, nicer hotels, and that kind of thing around there. Had a relative who lived in the area so we'd go down now and then.

One of the weirdest places that I've ever been to in my life was outside of Ashville. It was a stocked pay-to-fish carp fishing pond. Which sounds relatively boring and innocuous. Except that what it actually was an elaborate illicit gambling scheme where they had all kinds of wagers for biggest fish, smallest fish, various tagged fish, etc. Every hour or so they'd ring a bell and whoever had caught what would collect. You'd buy however many pieces of "bait" of different types at various prices which kind of served as "chips" and the pay-off was based on that. Then they also had a speakeasy type bar and a low-rent brothel operation too where you could spend your winnings. A really fucking strange deal. Not a lot to do on a Friday night down there at the time I guess. lol

I actually visited Biltmore last year, stayed overnight in the general area, toured the mansion, etc. Pretty neat place.

Traffic through there, especially around the Pigeon Forge area can be a real bitch. Granted, what I observed was in the summer, but traffic was similar to the Friday getaway shit on 95 from Shirlington to Lorton the Saturday we left. Sooo glad I was leaving and not coming in. Worse than Orlando.

Asheville is extremely liberal, but beautiful area . Knoxville is more family oriented town. Knoxville reminds me a lot of Richmond. Only less Negroes.

Well it was Gatlinburg in mid-July...

I just hit town and my throat was dry....

I thought I'd stop and get myself a brew...

At a old saloon on a street of mud...

There at a table dealing stud....

If you like to do the family camping thing check out Tsali. It is a really nice and under-used recreation area. You can camp and still have access to shower and flush toilet for the female family members.

If you're in the area and your money's burnin a hole in your pocket, the Harrahs Cherokee Casino is worth a visit.

------------------------------------
allot of casinos are popping up. 6 in MD. (that's your soc. sec. money no doubt)

most build and LATER owned by "a multi national firm"

could it be criminals ? hmmm. who would think that ?

-------------------------
they are everywehre and even in disputes in border / coal wars

so sure you lost your fucking gov money (meaning my money) gambling. but wher is it going ?

in fairfax they don't pay for metal (ie, trashed cars) they steal it, they tell you it's not worth anything or even make you pay to get rid of it, damn liars.

yes but where is the metal GOING ? likely high-rises or car companies. in what country though ?
