Talk about trying to sensationalize the story...

"It was the first killing on the school's campus since a gunman killed 32 people before turning the gun on himself in April 2007." WaPo 1/22/09

This almost sounds as if killings happened all the time at VT and it some sort of surprise that no one has been murdered in the past 20 months.

According to the Post article, the victim was decapitated with a kitchen knife.

Eeeeek.

Hard to believe that it was a 'kitchen' knife. I keep my knives pretty sharp, but even my cleaver would require some good whacks and it would take a little time to get the job done with my santoku.

Really? In a coffee shop? Did the people working at the coffee shop just stand there while this was happening?

"The Times story stated that the attack happened in an Au Bon Pain coffee shop in the Graduate Life Center"

Would you like a de-capitation with that cappuccino?

I don't know, some of those Ginsu knives are pretty sharp. You can even cut a tin can with'em!

Just another reason to support concealed carry on college campuses.

And that would have done what exactly in this instance? Shoot the attacker as the victim bleeds to death? I don't really see that helping the situation.

It would help everyone else in the room, worried about being next wouldn't it?

I see "help" in that situation as not having to go through the
expense of a trial. I've taught all my kids to handle firearms
and have no problem with CCW. (especially after what we've already
been through)

I can't believe they just stood around and did nothing. Working in a coffee shop they could have showered the kid with scalding hot water, snapped a broom stick off on his forehead and skwered him like a Vampire. What the fuck is going on with these spineless kids ? This really sucks.

Is killing people at VT an Asian thing?

Alias,
You are right about that. I'm not sure where you are going with it though. Are you saying that 'zero tolerance' madness is driving kids over the edge?

They probably videotaped it so that they could be first for the "IReports" section of CNN.

What a waste of bandwidth.

Thanks for expanding on your thoughts on the role that the herd mentality may have played here. Obviously neither of us was there, but it just seems like someone could have thrown a chair or something.
