Pass is a good word for it as we pass the bill that comes due for what the demokrats are about to spend a couple of generations downfield. Oh look, less than three hours left of our federal republic. Sure was nice, too bad we couldn't hit the tricentennial!

I am a fiscal conservative and feel compelled to mention that these posts are silly.

I want Obama's administration to succeed for the good of the country. And surprisingly, he is showing a far more pragmatic streak than I would have guessed. This is a good thing because ideology and abstractions don't matter in these kind of economic times. We need to simply go with what works.

I think the balancing act will be difficult. We clearly need some sort of stimulus plan - but at the same time, to pull us through this trough we are also going to need to lower tax rates - this of course was Japan's experience after 10 years of economic flat-lining. The tax rate thing might not be so hard for Obama to do - he is a smart guy and wants to do what works - but it really will be hard for the likes of Pelosi - one of the lesser minds in Congress who has little understanding of economics. And funding a stimulus plan and thereafter lowering tax rates is a difficult political dance.

How Obama (and his team) manages Congress will be fascinating and I wish him well. It may not be easy. Send absolutely brilliant people like Geithner and Summers (particularly Summers) to the Hill and the likes of Pelosi and Reid won't likely understand why they say. Yet Pelosi and Reid have power - lots of it.

I mention this because like Carter, the biggest challenges Obama will face will likely be within his own party. This means that the back and forth right vs. left chatter which people have become addicted to will now be largely irrelevant.

I wish Obama well.

and.....Obama has promised that he's going to take money away from programs? several of the first exec orders he's going to sign are going to be spending money.
one of the first will be the "Mexico City Policy" which has hardly anything to do with Mexico City, but is to fund abortion programs with tax payer money. Which some conservatives could equate to paying for Gay Weddings.

I guess I read the graphic incorrectly... the way I read it, it does include "teh War on Terror, defense spending or any of the bailout money".

Look at the line below the nice graph (that is probably where you got lost, it is ok, we understand!)...

"* Includes defense and domestic spending; does not include entitlements such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid"

Then again, you *could* be right, dono.

In other news: American flags are now available with their new updated colors; Red White and Black. If you buy two, you get a discount on your next set of food stamps, as well as instructions on how to git yur next welfare check.

I'm giving credit to Bush for the first four years just because the crap he pulled then didn't become apparent to the American public until his second term (most intelligent people knew better).

As far as the worst four years of my life, let me see. My house is now worth about half of what it was four years ago, as is my 401K. While I make good money, I made much more money four years ago.

Seriously, I can't imagine how the next four years, regardless of who is President, can be worse than what shithead just did to this country.

-I'm making 200% more than I did 4 years ago.
-My house isn't worth anything (renting) because I was smart enough not to buy when houses cost more than 8 times the national average yearly income.
-my 401k is doing great (though i'm down 30% from 12 months ago) because i'm still able to put money into it, within 12 months it will recover and i'll likely have to hand it over to the gov to help bailout people who bought homes they couldn't afford.

You left out the crucial word "OUR" money. How will these road projects help if no one can get a loan for mortgages anymore, thanks in part to the lazy attitude towards lending regulations of Wall Street and your Democrat lauded Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,,?

I'm not a fan of Repub spending, but you are a true fool if you're not willing to take a few tough years and wait for the housing and lending markets to self correct. If you like the bailout and believe it will be spent wisely, I'm sorry for you and sorrier for your children.

Actually, I didn't. I bought near the bottom. It is ridiculous that I can be in a house 10 years yet its appreciation hasn't kept place with inflation because of Bush's horrific handling of the economy.

Hoover expected the economy to self-correct. It didn't. You are a fool if you think a Great Depression is a better alternative to being proactive.

We actually had all these arguments over the last couple of years, and if what I saw on the television about an hour ago was correct, we won. Fortunately, we voted in a guy who actually respects what people from both political parties believe so you won't have to live with an agenda being rammed down your throat for the next four years. Trust me, it hasn't been a pleasant experience. My advice would be to calm down and give the guy a chance for a while. He is listening to ideas from lots of people. If you don't want to take my advice, you can take the advice that folks in the Republican Party offered to Democrats after the last election:

"Once the minority of House and Senate are comfortable in their minority status, they will have no problem socializing with the Republicans. Any farmer will tell you that certain animals run around and are unpleasant, but when they've been fixed, then they are happy and sedate. They are contented and cheerful. They don't go around peeing on the furniture and such."

i checked, and President Bush never said he would fix the economy...nor has anyone expected him to (except pissed off voters). i think your beef is more with the housing market. which i think has been handled well by Sen. Barney Frank who i think should narrate children's TV shows.

If the President isn't responsible for the economy, then Bush should have dissolved the Fed, Treasury and the Council of Economic Advisers.

I really can't stand Republicans with their bullshit about the President not being responsible for the economy when things are bad and then waving the Reagan Expansion in everyone's face. That's a load of crap.

Why is it, that at every Inauguaral, the media assholes go on and on about how "the peaceful transfer of power is unique to the United States". That we have no coups, wars, or assassinations when our government leadership changes.

What BULLSHIT! Maybe that happens in some third world shitholes....but many, many countries have peaceful transfers of power. I used to work in the UK and I know for a fact that the prime ministers come and go without incident.

Hopefully the overseas coverage omits such nonsense, beacuse people watching from abroad would be insulted to hear that ONLY the US can do this. No wonder the world hates our arrogant asses!

That's a valid point. Besides, Hitler and Mussolini experienced a peaceful transfer of power when taking office, and look at how that worked out.

Hoover was in office for aout 3 years of the depression, which didn't officially end until the WW2 spending (and employment) started. Our situation now is very different, it's gunshy banks and lenders, a housing market (and building and related trades) that was built on bullshit loans backed by securties and often by your tax dollars at work. FDR was a good war leader but I'm not sure if it can really be proven there wouldn't have been a correction without the New Deal. I know a lot of Democrats and union supporters who think FDR was the second messiah, I know he was a motherfucker in locking up 100K+ Japanese for no crime and for trying to overstep prez authority by expanding and stacking the SCOTUS.

Did you ever think that the appreciation of your home in say 05 or 06 was based on BS specualtion and that the deprec is part of a temp situtation created by scared lenders? It won't go back up in value to the levels of 2-3 years ago but it's not going to stay where it is now.

Do American consumers have anything to blame for the crisis? The live off credit card debt mentality? The buy a home and pray you'll get a payraise or enough appreciation to handle the ARM when it resets?

100% Agree. I recall that it was the late, not-so-great Ron Reagan who said, "Leadership starts at the TOP." Therefore, Bush should be fully accountable by the words of the GOP messiah-celebrity, Reagan.

irrelevant to my point about Cheney sucking and BHO's CIA appointment sucking as well.

And that still sounds suspiciously like something you hear in AA.

He has been in office for 4 hours now. Listening to lou , wingnut and JimW it sounds like everything in the last 8 years is somehow all Obama's fault.

It is starting to sound like you are just spouting bullshit just to get a reaction out of people. I can not comprehend that people actually believe this shit.

There are over a million people on the mall, all screaming and cheering our next president on.. And all you can say it how everything will go bad and then followed by some racist shit ,followed by saying how stupid Obama will be.

you are fucking crazy,

I mean of course. Bush could do no wrong and was always spot on, and no matter the majority in either side of the capital , it was always the the fault of the democrats, and the republican lay 100% blameless.

Does this sound right to you?

Take a Stand:

I didn't see any of what you claim. Especially anything racist. The fact that on this very day, you would play that card...is outrageous.

People like you are what stopped today from happening years ago, when it should have.

Don't bring that up again.

Racist? Haven't heard that, but it makes you feel better- repeat and accuse..

Have I said Bush could do no wrong? I respect him for the War on Terror, I condemn him for the Iraq strategy, the bailout and bad speaking skills.

Obama is a lawyer and was elected for his oratory skills,if he has any great policy accomplishments, I'd have to google them, I haven't seen any.

If Obama moderates from the platform he ran on, and it seems like he will, he may be an acceptable leader AND more importantly he'll prove the wacko lefties they bellowed for higher taxes, immediate withdrawal and softening on terror stood for nothing in the first place.

Lets talk in six months

Take A Stand - I always thought you were a Republican. Knowing now that you are not, please accept my apoligies for my attacks over the previous 2 years. It's good to see you have a reasonable perspective. Cheers.

No question? What exactly do you know the rest of the world doesnt? He was right on the need to conserve and divorce oursleves from oil...he is the only president who helped negotiate a permanent peace treaty between Israel and an Arab country (Egypt)...his selection for the Fed Reserve Board laid the foundation for the elimination of run away inflation that led to 20 years of a healthy economy that followed.

Name two accomplishments of the second idiot president G Bush! I'll give you one...No CHild Left Behind.

7000x4=28000, which puts you roughly around the six figure range....

President Barrack H. Obama wants you in on the Spread-The-Wealth Program :)

Wingnut,

If you haven't seen racist stuff, you just haven't been paying attention. To make it easier for you, here is a quote from earlier in this very thread:

On the bright side, JEC brought us "Billy Beer".

I'm kind of hoping to sip on an "Aunt Zetumi Beer" in the near future.

It certainly cannot be any worse.
