The Aldi chain is designed around people who are on the EBT and WIC programs. Good food but little selection at very low prices. Brands no one has ever heard of. If you go be sure you have a quarter in your pocket as you will need it to unlock a cart. You can pay by debit, cash, WIC or EBT. No credit and no checks accepted. Bring your own bags and prepare to bag your purchases yourself. You get your quarter back when you lock the cart in place.
If I was on a tight budget I would shop there.

LOL What type of supermarket doesn't accept credit cards?

The coin deposit for the carts make sense, and has been used in Europe for a long time.

Also bringing your own bags and bagging your groceries is very common in Europe.

Oh I forgot to mention, Doctor Dazzle is better than Doctor pepper and Aldi has it for about 2.25 a twelve pack.

they don't take credit cards because of the fees. it's a small %, but they're just cost-cutting to keep prices as low as they possibly can. their in-store brand (happy harvest) is just as good as regular brands, and usually less than half the price. You can get cans of green beans, corn, etc for 39 cents at Aldi.

Their cashiers get to sit down and get paid $12 an hour. But it's also because they double as food stockers, which still isn't a bad trade off.

Thanks for the info, you hit the nail on the head. Wish I had seen these responses before I left. I just went there trying to pay by credit card.

Aldi is owned by the same German family that owns Traders Joes. Many of Aldi's items are lower end versions the Trader Joe's packaged differently. It a european concept shop.

Been to walmart in Shunyang China and in no way is it better than America.
what I thought was the pet department was actually fresh food, turtles and eels.
The best part was watching the folks pick through the piles of raw chicken wings with their bare hands throwing back the ones they didn't like.

you must have mistakenly covered up the "made in usa" on the dr dazzle soda

in those days - in the 80's too - anything except disposable crap was made in usa or japan, usa exports were doing well, and europeans were crying usa was the devil becasue they owed money (noting not long before they'd tried to kill america in a war)

Aldi started accepting credit cards earlier this year. The quality is the same if not better than Giant/Safeway and is definitely much better than the Koreans and Shoppers. Their prices are great

Strawberries - $1.50 (same brand at Giant cost $5)

Eggs - .69c - (Giant they cost near $3)

The prices for the exact same items are often much lower at Aldi's compared to Trader Joe's. For example Maple Creme cookies are $1.99 at Aldi vs. $3.29 at Trader Joe. The graphics on the packaging are different, but all else is the same. I guess they charge more to cover the cost of the extra employees at the Trader Joe stores. There's generally a wider selection at Trader Joe's, but they say that if customer demand justifies an item, they will stock it at Aldi's as well.

Previously the Aldi stores in Europe took credit cards except Amex, now they do.

You are only one turn of the cosmic wheel of karma away from becoming one of these "scumbags types" yourself, just as you listed above, and maybe by the future time when you are forced to retire early with no savings after social security goes broke, and after one of the future international market crashes, you will find out what a blessing it is to find such a place while your welfare check only covers your food expenses while you co-inhabit a tent shared with another homeless person out there in the woods!

Aldi's competitor from Germany is getting ready to take them on here. Lidl put in a big warehouse in Fredericksburg and are looking to put stores from PA to GA.

The products at Trader Joe and Aldi come from the same suppliers (in China or wherever). There is no differencc in quality and the only difference is the graphics on the packaging.

Giant bought Food Lion.

Aldi products don't strike me as made in China, but then again, I don't know how they keep the prices down given the labor costs and steep benefits in Yurrip. Maybe the stuff comes from Chernobyl.

The canned products at Aldi come from the same factories that put out name brands like Delmonte or Green Giant.

That's the same with most generic store brands. They have different labels but all come from the same farms and processing plants.
