Thank God we are finally going to cut the very thing that got our country in such horrible shape to begin with. Chuck Hagel is a smart man and he realizes that our military is way too big and wasteful. Federal spending on the military must be preserved. The GOP has this right. We need those forces to potentially invade Ukraine and Syria.

The GOP is also right to cut veterans benefits. That is a cut we need. The GOP has been pushing this common sense plan for years. Vets become leeches on the government teat.

The military consists of human beings, eesh. You know this. Some are called to duty while others are simply looking for a job or avoiding jail time.

While a lot of them will see dangerous duty in defense of our country, most will be nothing more than support staff shuffling papers and mopping floors.

The world isn't the same as it was during WWII or Korea or Vietnam.

I served too but I hoped they would have cut me. Nothing heroic or brave about being shot or mortered at. The way some of draftees viewed the fucking Army was they didn't have any good soldiers so they conscripted US.
The military needs to be trimmed down 70% percent. In case of war,reinstate the draft.

I'd agreed that military (and all other spending) is out of control, but drafting people only when you need them is a good way to have lots of them killed. Witness WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, both soldiers and due to a lack of preparation and experience by people who aren't on the front lines.

We might owe benefits to draftees, but not to volunteers. They signed on the dotted line knowing that future government spending will have to be cut. We need to focus on building up for the next war, not licking our wounds from the last one.

They spend more on healthcare than military pay.

There's what called "Terms of Enlistment". Check it out.

The benefits are key to attracting volunteers. So there's understanbly a feeling by vets that the government is reneging on its bargain.

A conscript army is a terrible idea. Low morale, poor motivation, minimal training. Analysts have often cited Russia's conscript military as a large factor in its shortcomings in military campaigns.

The focus now is on UAVs and other drones. Boston Dynamics was a high profile company involved in this. Now that they went from tiny company to a subsidiary of Google, who knows what they can do now.

Unfortunately, the gov handouts INCREASE to the military contracts (Read lobbyists) such as Ngrum and the rest

Spending is still going up for special forces. They don't need large forces. A lot of these conflicts have been going on for decades with stealth US involvement.
