You Think Our Schools have it Bad
Date: January 08, 2009 01:39PM

"DETROIT -- A Detroit elementary school is asking for donations of toilet paper and light bulbs to continue functioning.

The principal of the Academy of Americas sent a letter to staff, parents and partners asking for donations of items "that are of the utmost importance for proper school functioning and most importantly for student health and safety."

In the letter, Principal Naomi Khalil cited budget constraints within the district as the reason that the school could no longer stock the items.

The district is grappling with a more than $400 million budget deficit and is on the verge of being assigned an emergency financial manager by the state.

The letter asks for toilet paper, paper towel rolls, trash bags and 60-, 100- or 150-watt light bulbs."

....Yeah. Sending out a letter like this should keep the state from assigning an emergency financial manager.

So they have no money for light bulbs, that is one thing. The toilet paper though - they could have used the paper from the mass mailing. Not sure how it is today but back when I was in the public school system in the early 80's no one took a dump at school because the stalls did not have doors. I say remove the doors, force students to crap at home where they will escape ridicule from their peers, and use that money to buy more light bulbs.

the light bulb thing is stupid because it's not like they need to be replaced all the time. if they do need to be replaced all the time, they need to stop buying the cheap bulbs that last for 3 months. they could always _invest_ in LED lights as they work for an average of 50K hours while standard bulbs last for 1K or 2K hours. the bulbs also save on electricity. it would take a while to make up the difference in cost but it's not like the school is going anywhere soon.

Detroit, yet another city that should be cordoned off and used as a naval bombing range. Kind of like Manassas.

If there's anything I've learned from my time with the government, it's that they would rather pay a little less now and keep paying in the future than pay a lot now and save in the long run.

Unless it is for 30 $2,500 cappuccino machines that will end up in storage.
