Add seniors to that list, and ask yourself why idiots fall for such
schemes?

The same reasoning behind those who purchase cars at Eastern Motors or
use payday loans.

I knew a guy who went to Everest College for a bit then went heavy
into Primerica. Have no idea what he's up to now.

I hesitate to fault the people who end up the victims of these "colleges". After all, they are just trying to get a degree and theoretically make something of their lives. Maybe they can't get into a normal college, or can't work it into their schedule while keeping a roof over their head. It is better than them just throwing up their hands and signing up for a WIC card.

These places really need to be clamped down though. These shitholes sometimes just up and close, leaving the students out in the cold and even more ripped off than before. Taking the time to research accreditation could help people, but most of these students probably don't even know what an accrediting body is in academia. Shit, even those are probably available for the right price.

Now Eastern Motors? That is just dumb. Go buy a shitty used car you can afford with cash.

The majority of community colleges offer night and online classes at
a fraction of the price. Lately, I've been hearing tons of
University of Phoenix and Devry commercials on the radio, basically
telling the listener how much of a threat they are to
traditional colleges.

Anyone remember the University of Northern Virginia. I've also read
about Sanford-Brown college in this area....and seen plenty of these
recently:

I was one of the dumbasses who went to the computer learning center in the 80's. Never got a real degree but made millions over the years and sent both my kids to college and got a comfortable retirement out of it. I agree with your statement however. Just sayin it can work out for some people. when I got out of school we were storing data on magnetic tape and I was lucky enough to be on the front lines of the industry through all the changes from there. Things are very different today however.

a. Because they're dumbasses.

b. Because most qualify for and can get financial aid.

c. Because the for-profit schools works them for that financial aid.


These places are all about transferring Federal money to the schools via students. ~86% of their revenues are Federal funds. They enroll ~10% of students but receive ~25% percent of all Federal financial aid. ~47% of their students default on their loans. It's a no-risk deal for the schools since they receive the funds on the front end and loans are made by others and/or guaranteed.

Not to say that some people can't benefit and some are better or worse, but the business model in all cases is about funneling educational funds. As I suppose it also is for more mainstream schools when you think about it. Their track record isn't a whole heck of a lot better.

hahahaa, same here, I went in for computer program and repair. I was working on the latest most powerful computer..." the 386 " I also stayed with it through all of the changes.

My guess, and it is just that, is that they are buying a degree, not a college education, and these schools let them get one with the minimum up front commitment of time and money.

However in these schools' defense, some "reputable" colleges are doing the same sorts of things, especially for graduate students.

Huh. I got me an English degree from Strayer and have job that is gotten better year after year. So guess I'm excepting to the rule.
