A New Hampshire political campaign worker faces a felony charge for sending out a fake news release saying his candidate's opponent had dropped out of the race, police said.
Carl Gibson was working for Democrat Maureen Mann, who running for a state representative seat, when he allegedly told news outlets that her Republican rival, Yvonne Dean-Bailey, had quit the race, reports the Concord Monitor.
Police claimed the 28-year-old's bogus statement had given voters the impression that last Tuesday's special election for Rockingham County's 32nd House district representative was uncontested.
Cops issued a warrant for Gibson's arrest on voter suppression charges.
The Concord resident turned himself in Thursday afternoon, reports New Hampshire Public Radio.
He later said he'd "probably had one too many beers" before sending out the hoax email which was intended to be a "prank," reports the Concord Monitor.
Gibson was also charged with distributing a false document. He will be arraigned June 22.
If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison and a $4,000 fine.
Mann, who called the incident "absolutely reprehensible," ended up losing the battle to represent the area, which includes Candia, Deerfield, Northwood and Nottingham.
