Kia Auto

Anyone here have experience with any KIA cars, 2012'ish to present? I'm considering buying a 2015 that looks very nice, drives well...but is still a goddamn Kia.
I know Hyundai has come a long way, and they're the same company, but I'm having trouble getting the idea that this is a turd dressed in a pretty outfit out of my head.
Obviously we're not going to get a durability report in a 2015, and the "reassurance" of a 10/100k warranty is nice, but doesn't detract from the fact that it will be a huge hassle if this car regularly takes a shit in me.

Just trying to see if anyone has any semi-recent experience.

Kia's are excellent cars. They are built well and extremely reliable. Pat Goss is high on the Kia and Hyundai brands. Goss is never wrong.

Kia is solid. Not quite as good as Toyota or Honda but Kia is a hell of a lot better than anything American made.

If you're looking for a cheap car...Kia's the way to go. But, even in their most optioned, "luxuriant" version they still don't compare to entry level base trimmed models from Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

If you absolutely can't scrape together a few more hundred dollars...buy the Kia. If you can wait, and save a bit more...you'll get a much more comfortable car.

Also, consider the kind of driving you do...If all you need is a car to commute, get the Kia. If you're doing any driving of more than hour frequently enough, save up and buy a Nissan, Honda or Toyota.

You sound like someone who hasn't actually looked at Kia or Hyundai in recent years. That's not at all true now. They are at least as well if not better appointed these days. I'm not even a fan of the Korean cars but you have to give them credit for transforming from what were makers of cheap little shit cans filled with problems to bettering the Japs at their own game.

Kia looks better than the Japanese rivals, they took Audis lead designer a few years back.

Kias have nicer interiors as well. The only thing I would take on the Japanese cars is their proven engines. KIAs revival is still new compared to the how long the Japs have been king.

Yeah, I'd agree. Motors are one area where they're still lagging. Not quite at the level of the Japs and Germans yet. That's a harder thing to do well in-house than just sourcing parts from other suppliers as most of the car is done.

And you sound like someone who doesn't understand nuance...In a free market (in the this case, the U.S. auto market) someone's product is at the top and someone's product is at the bottom. And the consumers get to decide based on their means and preferences which one they want to buy.

The bottom of the auto market currently...is Kia. Does that mean they're shit cars or that I am disrespecting them in any way? No. Kia is owned by Hyundai. Hyundai now competes directly with the best from Honda, Nissan and Toyota. But not Kia. Kias compete with Suzuki, Mitsubishi and perhaps Fiat.

Kia's cars are designed, built and priced to serve the bottom of the new car market. If you take the SAME class of vehicle, with the SAME options...the Kia is always going to price out lower...and by extension, its quality quotient is lower.

This is 2015. There are no bad cars. Some cars are just better than others and some cars cost less than others.

Feel bad that you're driving a Kia? Frustrated because you wish you could drive a nicer and or newer car? Don't bring me your problems...just work smarter and increase your value to your employer. Leverage that into a raise and buy a nicer car. Or put the increased income in the bank and use it for something else.

Either way...a Kia is a Kia. It's not a Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota or Honda and zero fucks given for what you think you're entitled to.

There's no "nuance" to it. You're just plain wrong. And the stupid ad hominem bs won't help you any. The days of the tin shitbox stripper Kia are long gone. Saying that its "most optioned, "luxuriant" version still [doesn't] compare to entry level base trimmed models" from the Japanese makers just makes it clear that you don't know WTF you're talking about.

Hyundai doesn't even position Kia as you attempt to. i.e., It's not some down-market line for them. It's a separately operated company that they also happen own. There are roughly equivalent competing models within both lines and they are marketed against every other manufacturer's models in the same class.

You're living in the past son.

Kia and Hyundai are not stripped down. It's just the opposite. The standard trim level Kia or Hyundai will come with features that you only get on a Toyota or Honda if you pay extra for the top trim level.

In other words, Kia and Hyundai took a page out of the Japanese play book from when they took on American auto manufacturers. Give the people more for their money to buy loyalty away from the big guys.

It was no way a new idea when the Japanese did it but it was effective as hell.

I agree with this. Kia is alot of car for the $$$. Like I said earlier in this thread reliable and good bang for the buck. They are good for giving to the kids so they have new reliable transportation for not a ton of doigh.

You guys ARE NOT comparing the same cars.

If you have a 4 door sedan over here which comes with little equipment standard...and you have another 4 door sedan over there which is also referred to as a base model but it comes with MORE standard equipment than the first car? You are not comparing the same cars!

Yes, car #2 comes with more things standard but it costs more than car #1. Meanwhile, car #1 comes with less things standard and costs less. Yes, you're getting more from car #2 but, you're also SPENDING more to get those things. Just because they are standard equipment doesn't mean they're free.

For an equal comparison when car shopping, you would want to price compare EQUALLY equipped cars in the same class before you even start test driving them.
