His backtracking on the specifics of the call don't change the nature of the action with respect to violating the "Logan Act." That he did it is not even in dispute.

At a more substantive level beyond that the biggest effect that it's had is to focus more attention on the deal. Which really was the intent so in that sense it's been successful.
