I read he was born in Niskayuna NY which is far upstate NY . His family is from Virginia, though, and they couldn't take the weather so moved back when he was a small child.

He is a plain folk NOVA native. His family is old money from Richmond. He is upset because he wasn't born a true Richmonder and hence he affects the Tidewater accent (which btw, no one under 70 has in Richmond) and dresses the part of the Southern Gentleman.
