Which brokerage do you use and would recommend?
Posted by: Individual Investor ()

I know there's a few people on FFXU with some money so I want to ask a serious question.

I'm looking to roll over some 401(k) money from an old job into an IRA with a brokerage account. I don't plan on trading a lot, but want more flexibility than just shoving the money into some mutual funds (I could keep it in the 401(k) if I wanted that).

So, my question is, which online broker do you use and would recommend?

I've been leaning toward Scottrade or Merrill (B of A) but can be convinced otherwise.

Nearly all of my investing will be equities, ETFs, and maybe mutual funds. No forex or options.

No problems with Scottrade but I've not used it as an IRA only as a brokerage. I use Fidelity for my IRA w/ brokerage and it's been very good. They usually have a deal where you get N free trades for a year if you move $N over. Don't recall the thresholds now. IB was fine too when I used it. More tailored to active traders.

Really, unless maybe you're very actively trading, any of the larger brokerages are going to be about the same. Some may have some particular advantages given your particulars (e.g., free ETF and fund trading, etc.).

Cool. Thanks for everyone's input. I'd forgotten about Interactive, I'll take a look at them and reconsider Fidelity.

And the free ETFs should be a plus since I'm moving out of mutual funds and prefer ETFs as they have greater liquidity and lower fees.

You might want to check with Stabitha. He has a PhD in Quantitative Finance and works on the Medallion Fund.

If you trade a lot, Interactive Brokers has the lowest retail trading cost and the widest variety of securities that you can trade. However, they aren't going to be excited to take your call if you have customer service questions. If all you do is buy US securities and if you don't trade much overall then just use Schwab or another large US broker - avoiding the hassle of trying to track down an annoying tax form is worth $100 extra in commissions. And of course if you are working right now fith Forex - here are the rates of top brokers http://snalaska.net/

don't ever invest money on advice you find on flu, nor believe anyone with a piece of paper you've even seen is a doctor. believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

investing in real estate is only good for the calculated, “in the know” investor. you really have to know what you’re doing to make money. or plan on being a landlord (aka work) to maintain the investment. if it were easy, everybody would be out buying cheap land in WV or southern VA to bolster their portfolio. there’s a good reason you don’t commonly see real estate investment products offered by banks, like the ones they offer for stocks and bonds, because it’s real risky.

You want to make real money?

Start your own business.

Investing in the stock market is a fools game. Brokers and wealth management people call me all the time promising great annual returns of 10-20% and I laugh. That is a pathetic return.

I've started two companies that made the D&T Fast 50. My average 5 year growth rate was 8,000 - 13,000 %. Hired my replacement to run the show. Retired at 42. I just go to financial review meetings once a quarter and generally do whatever the fuck I want every single day as the money pours in. Grow a set of balls and be a real man. Jump into the deep end and swim with the sharks.

Selling Amway and Pampered Chef to your friends isn’t really “starting a business”, but congratulations on your success.

People watch too many movie and read the Wall Street Journal completely confident in what they've read. Investing in the stock market is like gambling at a casino. The house almost always wins. Brokerage firms are interested in one thing, and one thing only; lining their pockets with your money. Investing isn't really that hard. You can do it yourself with a little guidance. As someone else mentioned, Index stocks are the way to go. It isn't as sexy or exciting as rolling the dice in the stock market, but there's less risk and higher profit margins, with enough time. I recommend reading Millionaire Teacher by Andrew Hallam. He's made over a million dollars in 15 years, on a teacher's salary no less. Diversifying your portfolio with bonds, securities and small real estate investments could also work for you.

Thanks. I've never participated in pyramid schemes. I started my own businesses from scratch.

Rule #1 - determine what the revenue producing unit (RPU) is for the business (labor hours/products/IP licenses), how many RPU's you have to sell to achieve annual net profits of $1,000,000, and if those figures are daunting or unrealistic, it isn't worth your time or money.

Rule #2 - don't re-sell other people's products/services. That requires high volume sales that produce low net profits. You have no control over their production, quality, distribution, or pricing. Fools game.

Rule #3 - don't be a dickless wonder and try to shit on me for giving sound and experienced business/investment advice for free. There is no place, no stock, no investment portfolio that can make you more money and get you a higher return on investment than in a small company with a great product/service offering.

I've made more money while typing this than most of you will make all year. Get off your ass and go for it. Getting what you want is your decision. Figure it out. Go for it. Be moral and ethical and make something great happen in your life.

What industry/sector were your businesses in? Did you already have the seed money to start them, or did you need to take out loans?

IRA and 401 accounts should always be with the low cost broker. Cost and investment options make Vanguard your best choice.

The first step to starting your own business is determining how you will make money? Really?? No way!!

Where did you learn this trick? On Youtube?

Came for the same advice here. It's too early to talk about brokerage in my case, I am just learning online at https://www.mytradingskills.com/ , but it is always very interesting to read about trading beforehand and to hear other people's stories, both successful and not.

Hello. If you`re looking for an additional income I can recommend you to study forex trading. It can be very profitable now because currencies are very volatile. Feel free to read next comparison of eToro vs Interactive Brokers to choose the most reliable forex broker for yourself
