How were these guys able to perform on arena stages with pyrotechnic explosions going off all around them and manage to not have their hair catch on fire?

Isnt hair spray extremely flammable?
Especially spraying an entire bottle on their hair right before they went on stage to perform?

The Station Nightclub fire in West Warwick RI, about the year 2003, went up in flames after pyrotechnic devices set off fires, I think the group playing was "Great White", one of the worst fires in nightclub history.

Back in the good 'ole days we used Freon as a propellant. Freon, as you may know, is bad for the environment. It makes holes in things. Important things like the Obozo layer. Freon was replaced with the slightly less hazardous butane and propane.

Catching fire = good. Destroying ozone layer = bad.

Hi, just passing through, as a tried and true "Headbanger" from the eighties, I can tell you for sure that Metallica was not, is not or will ever be any other METAL besides HEAVY METAL !!!!!!!!! There was also Glam Rock/Metal, such as Twisted Sister, L.A. Guns and Poision. Bands such as Skid Row and Def Leppard are Hard Rock/Metal. IMO...... They all ROCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYBODY, Can I get a..... ROCK, ROCK TILL' YOU DROP ?? !!!!!!!

The first one is Metallica. The next one to the right is Hanoi Rocks. Below them is Skid Row, and below that is Cinderalla. Then Motley Crue is the top right corner, above Twisted Sister, Poison, then Guns and Roses in the bottom right corner. To the left corner in the big b&w pic is Def Leppard. On the right middle is Quiet Riot, Kevin DuBrow with the yellow shirt.

Sebastian's right in the front of that photo. That's the old school Skid Row. Not the crap they did with Paul Varone on lead. Bach was really the one and only singer for Skid Row. Slave to the Grind was one of the better metal records of that time.

I can't name most of these, I remember what most of them sound like though.

Metallica is a thrash metal band, one of the Big Four, along with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth. Metallica kind of sucks today, but back in the day when Cliff Burton was writing all their songs and they were young and hungry they were pretty awesome.

Hanoi Rocks, I think the singer was killed by Motley Crue singer Vince Neal in a drunk driving accident. Oops, that'll learn you to get in cars driven by party animals.

I guess you could call Def Lepard hair metal, even though they are a British band and not part of the 80's LA scene where hair metal came from. Some of those Brit bands adopted the whole hair metal look and sound because that's what MTV was selling at the time, and MTV dominated the music business in the 80s. If you wanted to get anywhere you had to get on rotation on MTV.

Most hair metal sucks ass. But you can always pick out a few decent tunes. Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil album had a few, they were actually still kind of metal at that point, but they just got more commercial and more obnoxious after that. The chicks all had teased out hair at their shows...

Which brings us to the hairspray question. Can't help you there; I didn't use the shit but every girl I knew did at some point, and lots of people still smoked in the 80s. I guess once it dries it's harder to ignite? Michael Jackson's hair lit up because flames hit him directly in his head, and it fucked him up a lot worse than they let the public know about. That was when he started to get really wierd and started looking like the Joker.

Metallica was definitely not hair metal.

Hair Metal in my definition had more of a pop, almost bubblegum sound, even with the power chords, speed leads and amped drumming.

The look was part of the equation as much as the sound.

ANyone hear like Red Kross?

Van Halen kind of set the template for hair rock and paved the way. Spandex, over the top singer and guitar licks, etc. VH hit the scene in 78, before hair rock really exploded. But VH was a bit above the fray, making consistently good music until DLR left the band. Even with Hagar they were not hair metal, but they were a lot more pop sounding with douchier love songs.

Not all of the bands were like that. You obviously were not there or involved in the scene.

These guys were influenced by Def Leppard, Boston, and Quiet Riot.

With regard to Rock versus Metal, ask youself, "Is this song about sex, drugs or rock and roll?" If yes, the song/band is Rock. If not, then you are likely listening to Metal.

This firmly places Van Halen in Rock and Metallica in Metal.

Most of the hair bands fall into one of the categories based on this (usually due to their affinity or lack thereof for love ballads). For instance, Kiss is Rock (if I ever hear Beth again, it will be too soon). Queen is bit tricky to pin down.

I remember back when MTV's new concept was going to eliminate radio DJ and the VJ (Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson, Martha Stewart types) were going to rule. BTW are any of the original VJs in the R&R Hall of Fame?

This would make Rush and Yes metal bands. They are prog rock. Your theory is too simple. Pink Floyd liked to sing about death but they clearly were not a metal band. Radiohead sings about some of the same shit Floyd did, also not a metal band.

The other thing to remember is that the definition of "heavy metal" has changed a lot. In the 70s, any band with a heavy sound, including Rush and Van Halen, were called "heavy metal" by lots of people. In the 80s thrash bands started to define more like we do today. Most people do not call Tool a metal band, for instance, but they are a lot heavier than a lot of "metal" bands from the 70s/early 80s.

They were Germans, not from VA.

Some of the new cuts from Winger are really good. Although, nobody in Winger has any musican ability. They can't write music, sing, or play their instruments Other musicans such as: Demi Lovato, Jay-Z, Kayne, Clay Aiken and Miley Cirus are way better musicans and play their insturments better than anyone in Winger. Miley is an awesome guitar player and blows away John Roth and Reb Beach.

A little bit of everything from the 80s hard rock and glam influences in this video.

The song was produced by Roy Thomas Baker who was a prolific producer in the 80's.

Winger does an awesome cover of I'm the Man on the Silver Mountain, way better than the original.
