Anne Duncan to be named Secretary of Education
Posted by: Former Educator ()

Hooray! Bringing the wonderous performance of Chicago Public Schools to neighborhoods across America.

A study by the Consortium on Chicago School Research that stated that 6 of every 100 CPS freshmen would earn a bachelor's degree by age 25. 3 in 100 black or Latino men would earn a bachelor's degree by age 25. The study tracked Chicago high school students who graduated in 1998 and 1999. 35% of CPS students who went to college earned their bachelor's degree within six years, below the national average of 64%.

Chicago has a history of high dropout rates, with around half of students failing to graduate for the past 30 years.

The schools consistently rank in the bottom 20% of standardized test scores with many in the bottom 10%.

If the schools are so good and Anne Duncan is such a great administrator, why did President Elect Obama send his kids to private school?

If this is change, you can keep it.

This woman deserves to be fired, not a promotion. I thought this sort of crap was ending with a new administration. Certainly, a better candidate for Secretary of Education is out there.

Yep - nothing like picking the most qualified candidate to go into the position. But they need someone in place to help promote the new education agenda they have already perfected in Chicago....

Right.

I'll give Pesident Bush credit for having a half way decent record on education. His no child left behind program is a major step in the right direction for wrestling local control away from local school boards and not allowing public school systems become the dumping grounds for the forgotten in society. My only criticism is the program is under funded..in a big way.

I guess only time will tell on this nomination. Maybe...just maybe...Obama knows something about Ms Duncan that you do not.

Or perhaps Mr Duncan knows something about Obama that you do not. One of the best ways in politics to get and keep your job.

For the record, it's Mr. Duncan. His name is Arne, not Anne.

Arne has an uphill battle to fix reading comprehension, especially among the FFU community.

Mr. Obama gives Mr Duncan a little more credit then does RV. Big Surprise.

"In just seven years, he's boosted elementary test scores here in Chicago from 38 percent of students meeting the standards to 67 percent. The dropout rate has gone down every year he's been in charge."
On a key standardized test, Obama said, "the gains of Chicago students have been twice as big as those for students in the rest of the state."
Duncan would take over a sprawling department that has focused during the Bush administration in winning passage and then implementing the president's signature No Child Left Behind education program.

Nice quote. Yes, and you give Arne credit for what? Being a name that Obama uttered?

Do you know anything about him?

Quote

Arne Duncan graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1987, majoring in sociology. He was co-captain of Harvard’s basketball team and was named a first team Academic All-American. From 1987-1991, Mr. Duncan played professional basketball in Australia, where he also worked with children who were wards of the state.

Duncan returned to Chicago in 1992 to direct the Ariel Education Initiative, which seeks to create outstanding educational opportunities for inner-city children on the City’s South Side. In 1998, he joined the Chicago Public Schools.

In June, 2001, Mayor Richard M. Daley named Duncan Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Public Schools.

Duncan currently serves on the Boards of the Ariel Education Initiative, Chicago Cares, The Children’s Center, the Golden Apple Foundation, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, Jobs for America’s Graduates, Junior Achievement, the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Foundation, Renaissance Schools Fund, Scholarship Chicago and the South Side YMCA.

He also serves on the Board of Overseers for Harvard College and the Visiting Committees for Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration. He was a fellow in the Leadership Greater Chicago’s class of 1995, and a member of the Aspen Institute’s Henry Crown Fellowship Program, Class of 2002. He has received honorary degrees from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Lake Forest College and National Louis University.

In 2006, the City Club of Chicago named Duncan Citizen of the Year.

Note, he is NOT a former educator:

Education career

Duncan has extensive experience in educational policy and management, but has not been a teacher. In 1992 Duncan became director of the Ariel Education Initiative, a program to enhance educational opportunities for children on Chicago's South Side that was started by John W. Rogers, Jr., and in 1998 he joined the Chicago Public Schools. He became Deputy Chief of Staff for former Schools CEO Paul Vallas in 1999.

Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed Duncan to serve as CEO of Chicago Public Schools on June 26, 2001.

He was a fellow in the Leadership Greater Chicago's class of 1995, and a member of the Aspen Institute's Henry Crown Fellowship Program, Class of 2002. In May 2003, he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Lake Forest College.

Amazing - the guy has just been nominated, and much like during the campaign, EVERY blog in the world has his information already - there a 133K hits just for his name. Almost all of them related to today's announcement. Amazing internet machine they have going.

Hmm - dissension in the ranks. Seems folks at DailyKOS are not so thrilled - interesting:

What did you expect the Pres. Elect to say? "Hey look at the failing bag of shit I am nominating for Secretary of Education."

-- Some inner-city schools in low-income neighborhoods of Chicago are performing so poorly that Illinois state Sen. James Meeks helped to organize a mass boycott of Chicago Public Schools earlier this year as part of his Save Our Schools Now campaign. On Sept. 2, nearly 1,000 Chicago students skip school as part of the boycott.

-- District-wide high school test scores remain stagnant—only 31 percent of juniors meet state standards—leading many to question whether Chicago Public Schools graduates can succeed in college or in the job market.

--- Under Duncan, the lowest performing schools actually got worse, Catalyst reported this month. All but two of the city’s 10 lowest performing high schools in 2001 further deteriorated in 2008.

--- In 2007, only 17 percent of eighth graders tested at or above grade level in reading in Chicago Public Schools. Thirteen percent scored at or above grade level in math. Twenty-three percent scored at or above grade level in writing.

I think the OP had a good point (aside from misspelling the name), if Arne Duncan was so great in Chacago, how come the Pres. Elect's kids went to private school? The only people that should be celebrating this appointment are Chicago parents. It gets this failure out of their system.

If those are numbers and statistics you want nationwide, then I guess he will do fine. Call me a nay sayer all you want, I'd say I am a realist and numbers don't lie. I suppose a term for you might be pollyannish. Perhaps Mr. Duncan does have some good ideas, I just wonder why he never put them into practice in Chicago.

Duncan promises to bring to the nation what he brought to Chicago - cappuccino and espresso machines for every school!!!! F the students and their whining about learning.

Report: Schools spent $67K on cappuccino machines
1 day ago

CHICAGO (AP) — An inspector's report shows Chicago Public Schools employees bent rules to spend $67,000 for espresso machines that largely haven't been used. The report shows the nation's third-largest district bought 30 cappuccino machines for a culinary arts program.

But several months after the purchases only three were in use, though not for the program. One has disappeared and 22 hadn't even been opened.

The one that disappeared is in Detroit. The kids are using its filters to wipe their asses.

I guess that nixes the nomination of Juan Valdez as the Assistant Secretary of Cappuccino Education. Fuck!

Unfortunately the Republicans will hype it and Anderson Cooper will wring his hands about in on CNN.

Of course, when Bush lost $9 billion in Iraq, nobody gave a shit.

Instead of a new plan a day. The best way to fix the problem is allow those who have a student loan to prepay a stated amount. This would free the payees of a gigantic burden, allow the loan to be prepaid. The fix would be subtract interest paid from the principle and allow the note to be paid in full. What a thought! Money would flow into the economy from the freeing of the loans the gov't would get a windfall. It stupid stuff has got to stop.
