NHTSA: Make Backup Cameras Mandatory in All New Cars

WASHINGTON -- After several delays, the Obama administration is reviewing a revised rule that could push automakers to install backup cameras in more of their cars and trucks.

The reworked regulation, submitted to the White House on Dec. 25, would set new rear visibility standards for light vehicles sold in the United States, according to a White House database that tracks the rulemaking process. The standards are aimed at keeping children from being run over and killed by vehicles moving in reverse.

No details on the plan, submitted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, were made available.

Depending on the strictness of the final rules, automakers might decide to install backup cameras in all of their models. The standards may also allow automakers to comply by making less costly changes -- for example, by redesigning a car's mirrors to reduce the odds that a child behind the rear bumper will go undetected.

Just ban liberals from driving. That may reduce the number of children they murder.

Im going to buy 10 older cars (96-2003 ish) and moth ball them. All of the new cars you can no longer work on and have such ridiculous safety features they are becoming unaffordable and too costly to maintain.

Those backup cameras cost about $100/each for the manufacture. Got of repairing a stupid child ran over....several hundred thousands each. Lets face it, these old baby boomer don't turn their head anymore when they drive.

all big governments plan to lock down the common person, forced to use public transportation and be controlled and tracked

You're going to get a whole generation of people that will depend on electronics rather than looking in the mirrors or turning their head.

It may be inexpensive per unit for the manufacturer, but how much will it drive up prices on the market? How much will it cost to replace if it breaks? What if the camera manufacturer no longer makes one for your specific car?

I foresee the future-

Safety inspection fail- Backup camera non-functioning.

Who is pushing for cameras? I rarely hear of people getting run over by a car backing up these days. A simple alert sensor would work just fine.

In the U.S. at least fifty children are being backed over by vehicles EVERY week. Forty-eight (48) are treated in hospital emergency rooms and at least two (2) children are fatally injured every WEEK.

• The predominant age of victims is one year olds. (12â€23 months)

• Over 60% of backing up incidents involved a larger size vehicle. (truck, van, SUV)

• Tragically, in over 70% of these incidents, a parent or close relative is behind the wheel.

Those are the cheap ones....a couple grand for a casket and flowers.
It's those ones that live that cost money to fix, and kids always cost more than adults to fix.

Although people will become lazy and rely on them too much, instead of doing a proper visual by turning their heads. Especially the fat folks with the obese neck flab that find it difficult to turn their heads 5 degrees. It might be made a requirement for them though, just as a safety issue.

I have a Backup Camera in my 2011 sonata. I will never buy a car without a backup camera again. I can't even count how many times i got into tight spaces without help because i had the camera.

Back up Camera is worth it just for parallel parking alone.
