Acutally, it IS REAL.
Because the question only says "is this image real"? It doesn't say what Real is. Is it a "real' image? Yes. It's an image, I can see it and you can see it, so its real. It exists. But is it an aunthentic image? No. It is obviously a phototshoped image, but that doesnt mean its not still a "real" image.
You would have failed the test. It is beause you must pay attention to the detail.

Actually, the main question is whether or not science has gone too far, and since that image is real, then yes. Science has crossed the line by giving seagulls arms.

Those are two separate questions. It's your own mind that made that connection, and that's just what the test maker wanted you to do. To assume the question about the image was related to the science going too far. Obviously, ducks don't have big arms with biceps. So it's not real in that sense, but it is still a real image. Ducks with man arms aren't real though.

However, muscly-armed seagulls are apparently very real, and we need to find out how to stop them should they ever escape the lab.

The entire arm looks hairless. More than likely, the scientists just switched on the hair gene completely. That's the safest way to ensure that it doesn't mix with the feather genes and accidentally cause the bird to grow hair.
