House GOP seeks to torpedo IRS budget

The intensified push against the IRS suggests that GOP lawmakers still see the IRS’s treatment of Tea Party groups as a potent political issue, and want to bring it back to the forefront even as they work on big-ticket issues like immigration.

Some top House Republicans acknowledged that a 24 percent cut in the IRS’s bottom line — from just under $12 billion this year to $9 billion in fiscal 2014 — would be unlikely to gain traction in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

But Republicans said the IRS needed to be put on notice, especially after Danny Werfel, the agency’s temporary acting leader, asked lawmakers for $1 billion in new funding last month.

“We’re making a statement that [the IRS is] going to have to clean up the mess,” Rep. Charles Boustany Jr. (R-La.) said. “This is part of a process whereby we’re trying to hold the IRS accountable, making a strong statement that they have to account for every dime that they’re spending. They’re going to have to cooperate with us in our investigation.”

“There’s more than an abundance of politics in this place. But the IRS has a function and a job to perform, and they ought to be funded in the ability to do it,” said Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

“I would like to do away with the IRS, by having tax reform that doesn’t require them,” Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said. “But I’d be very concerned if that were the amount — that would be pretty steep under the circumstances, because they do have a very tough job.”

The GOP push comes as the congressional investigation into the IRS targeting has mostly gone behind closed doors, with Boustany saying that investigators are sifting through agency documents and emails.

Why don't they just vote, for the 38th time, to repeal Obamacare?

This defunding of the IRS effort will be no more effective.

No need to do that. Even Obama realized the law is an abysmal failure and is "delaying" its implementation.

The current GOP campaign isn’t just about opposing the Affordable Care Act or arguing for its repeal. It’s about making it harder for uninsured Americans to gain access to coverage under a law passed and signed by a democratically elected Congress and President, and upheld by the Supreme Court, in service of the political goal of making it a greater liability for Democrats in the 2014 elections

I always love when liberals spout bullshit even the administration doesnt buy.

The law sucks period. It doesnt make it easier for anyone, it makes it more expensive and you get crappier care for more money for 250+ million americans. The only people it even remotely helps is the 20-30 million illegals.

The administration delayed the law because of all the reports of businesses dropping health care making fewer people have coverage having to pay more for it out of pocket if they wanted it. If the law was so great they wouldnt keep pushing implementation back past the elections.

PS your talking points are outdated, youre still working off the pre delayed implementation play book. The new talking points have been updated to say how theyre flexible with the law and realize its not perfect and are going to work to fix it.

Remember all of that when it starts falling apart under its own weight and people start figuring out that it's not "free health care" and just how much it's going to cost them, as well as other impacts on job hours, etc.

The biggest thing that it does is to simply force private citizens to give lots more of their money to those evil insurance companies and 'Big Pharma' as you guys like to call it.

And it's a 100% Dem baby. All yours. Enjoy!
