Internet-Web Thread -- for Bob
Posted by: Yuck ()

OK Bob and others, here's the new thread for the Internet discussion.

It did not belong it the thread about the Girl that got hit on Stringfellow Rd.

So Finish reading there, but post replies here.

I hope this goes good, as we can all shed a lot of light on how we got to this point on the "Web", thru all it's previous incarnations.

Now where is my HC with Single-Sided, Single Density "Elephant Disks", and my 512 Baud Modem...

Oh, and remember that Compuserve was the "Rage" back then, and AT&T's Gaming Network, and AOL was just a little "player"???

usenet was the source of all...

And McAfee came out with the 1st Anti-Virus, which took hours to download...

If you are too young to remember this, it's OK, it will be a History Lesson.

Enjoy!

512 baud modem?

My first modem was a 300 baud acoustical coupled modem that cost $199 for my $199 commodore 64. My 5 1/4 inch external disk drive also cost $199 for the same $199 computer. But I could use a hole punch to make the floppies double sided.

My first computer was a TI99a. I think that cost $249, or something, and used a cassette recorder for external storage.

I remember when AOL first started as Quantum Services, and released Q-Link for the C-64, but everyone pretty much preferred to use all the free dialup bbs services instead of paying $29.95 a month, and with FIDONet, could send messages for free or for less than a dollar for 20 messages, all over the world.

The facility where the president goes varies based on where he is at the time of a crisis, plus, they have multiple sites in order to obfuscate the president's exact location. (of course, the soviets had all of the sites they knew about targetted anyway.) The cabinet may not all go to the same location, and they definitely don't go to the same location as the president, seeing as the COG line of succession includes cabinet members and they wouldn't want a significant chunk of the line of succession all gathered in one location during a national emergency.

My first computer was about $5. It was a slide rule. My modem was about $2, and was two tin cans attached by a string. Go ahead and laugh, but we never had to worry about a virus!

If you dumbasses actually knew anything about these super secret sites you keep talking about to prove your mental superiority, you would also know that they don't want you to talk about them; locations, capabilities, etc. Yes, the location is technically unclassified, but it's still considered sensitive info.

Atari 800 baby. 16K of memory (no gold contacts made for lots of lockups) - later I upgraded to 32K!!, and cassette tape drive for storing stuff on ($3500 total - my life savings at the time augmented by a substantial gift from my parents). Also we had a TRS80 Model II (that was the business model) with 2 8-inch floppy drives - one that was used for the OS, and one for other programs/storage. Then there was the Wang (I forget the model) in my parents office that I learned to program at the age of 15 that used binary programs (essentially machine language programming at the kernel level). We had a Sears version of the Atari game console - Pong was a huge hit at home, and I loved Star Raiders. Eventually I got a 300 baud modem for the Atari that cost something like $300 or something. The prices back then were crazy.

Of course, I remember our first color console TV when I was a kid - I remember (and we have a picture somewhere) watching guys from the early Apollo missions walking on the moon (possibly the first televised pictures from the landing). I was born less than a month before JFK was killed.

I was jealous of the kid down the street who had a Trash-80. He was actually the one who printed out my first list of BBS #'s for me.

But then again, the C-64 was still the best bang for the buck at the time. I had over 300 floppy disks, filled on both sides, with games and other software. I could do just about anything the TRS-80 could do, and I could play every game on the atari 2600 and other game consoles of the day (coleco, etc.)

I agree. That's why Yuck is trying to claim that Mt Weather is some super-secret NSA/AT&T facility. Because he/she wouldn't have a clearance to know about it if he's/she's talking about it.

I can talk about the true purpose because I drove out there to pick up my mom one time in 1987 when her car wouldn't start after spending a week there. I know she was working on a Continuation of Government contract with a company that was eventually bought by Booz-Allen and Hamilton, working with FEMA and the State Department. It's not really classified. I mean, the information they dealt with was classified, but the contract and the purpose of the facility are not classified. It's a big hollowed out mountain that they have placed hundreds of trailers inside of, with bunkbeds in some, offices in others and kitchens and dining rooms in others.

So, in a way, it is part of the bunkers where the government goes in emergencies, but mostly grunt-level government workers. We're talking stuff like infrastructure, IRS, Social Security, FEMA medical and food supply stuff, etc.
