Route 66

For someone who has been here for little more than 10yrs, and has only lived in NY, VA and one another mid western state (MN, for very short time), i always hear Route 66 mentioned in movies, entertainment and even onetime by a co worker.

Looking around the Internet and Wikipedia, i didnt' really get a good understanding of what it means. All i found out was, it was no longer there for some reason or another. Now i know there are some people (old?) that are here who have been to it and know more about it.

Would you kind enuff to explain it what this whole route 66 is? Was it as important as I 95 is?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but i just heard about it now on TV.

OK, first of all Route 66 has no connection with I-66, the interstate highway that runs from around the K Street/E Street area in DC to I-81 west of Front Royal, VA.

Prior to the Interstate highway system, the first roads were "US Routes" and state routes.

"Old" Route 66 was one of the first of these US highways and it ran from near Chicago to California. I believe it was called the Will Rogers Highway but I could be wrong about that..

In any event as the primary East-West route through the middle of the country it was pretty important and alot of stores, hotels, and tourist traps sprung up along it.

When the interstate highway system came in (I-40 and others), parts of US 66 were either superceded or bypassed. And over time the route lost its importance, eventually leading to it being decertified as a US route (there is no "Route 66" today).

That said, some of the old highway still exists in various states of repair and a few states maintain portions of it as a "State Route 66" (I think Arizona is one) mainly for historical reasons.

BTW: When 66 existed there were various spur routes and one of them was Route 666.

Because it was a very poorly designed rural highway, it was one of the deadliest in the country. And residents didn't like the name. (Well the ones who didn't steal the route shields for their own personal collections). So when 66 was decommissioned, the spur became US Route 491. (and it still exists - eventually being upgraded).

they're talking about US 66. it's an old route that runs from Chicago to LA. It was part of the "US Highway system", long ago before interstates were built.

The highway here in NoVA is I-66. Interstate Highway 66. And it only goes from the Potomac to I-81 in Front Royal.

to make it simple: US designated highways are a legacy system. Interstate (I) highways are the big modern roads we all know nowadays.

You wouldn't understand...

The reason that it has some nostalgia associated with it (or however you want to characterize it) wasn't so much the road itself. It was that it took you through such a wide range of places and all of the different stuff along it. There used to be a lot more unique places with their own distinct flavor in this country. Now everything is pasteurized and homogenized so that it all pretty much looks and feels the same no matter where you are. Same cookie-cutter stores, fast food and restaurant chains, strip malls, highways, standard street signs, etc., etc. People used cars more for travel and took more time to stop and see/do things along the way. 66 wasn't alone as far as that goes, just a main route and more well known.

Can't really explain it. Different time and place. One of those things that you had to be around for to really appreciate. Kind of like when kids used disappear all day to go play outside.

Yes, I drove on "Route 66" in Arizona, in Williams, near Flagstaff.

Simple things like that excite me.

One of the things on my perennial to-do list is to drive to Alaska (in summer, of course. Winter irks me). My understanding is that it's about 3800 miles from NoVa to Fairbanks. The roads are supposedly pretty well developed.

The section through Colorado and Utah is flat out stunning. Gets a bit boring when it becomes interstate 70 but gets interesting again past Salina, Utah.

I drove the bit through Nevada once when the were having a bloom of grasshoppers, which seemed to do best a certain altitude (not too low, not too high). Driving through basin and range means going through valleys then up over ridges, so going up and coming down we plowed through those fuckers, like a heavy rainfall. When I returned the rental car the front grill and axel looked like a Jackson Pollack.

I would guess that most residents of northern VA think that I-66 is "that route 66." I've personally informed many people to the contrary. Usually they are people who have not lived here for more than a few years...

i always think i-66 is route 66... it takes forever to get down and you have time to see everything. like nra building, walmart, route 29, wide open space with power lines, rest stop, bull run park, manassas, gainesville, haymarket, beverly's mill, then trees and mountains... this no route 66?

That's only because I bear more than a passing resemblance to Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher and periodically yell out 'This one is mine, Nazarene!' in my sleep. Other than that I'm great on road trips.

This thread is mildly interesting.

I grew up in central Illinois, and the road I lived on (a one lane blacktop) hit US66 after about two miles, and that's how we got to town. It was four lane divided concrete highway, not "limited access" with cloverleaf interchanges. It had shit-ass roads coming up to it, with stop signs (stop signs not on 66). It was dangerous as hell, and my mother had a bad accident on it. When I was about 10 or 12, it changed to I-55, and became a real interstate with limited access, etc. It is an incredibly historic road. The Okies used it to get to California. Get your kicks on Route 66. Ever hear that? There was a TV series called Rt 66. Two guys in a Corvette.

As for Rt 50, a couple of years ago a friend and I went from Sucramento to Fairfax on Rt 50, just for the fuck of it. The California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado sections are great; it gets boring after you get out of the rockies. The stretches through Kansas, Missouri, etc are interminable. It improve a little when you hit the Appalachians. It was an experience. Only do it with someone you can stand to be with for more than a day or two.

Why do democrats, like you, think it's OK to beat women?

Your party needs to move out of the fucking slums and stop abusing women.
