When my parents (baby boomers) both bought their first cell phones 30 years ago, there was nobody there clapping and cheering for them yet having a cell phone in 1983 was way more of a bigger deal than having a cell phone right now.

Your parents spent $4k in 1983 for a DynaTAC 8000X (the equivalent of about $9,200 bucks today)?

They were suckers.

I sure don't remember cell phones being available in the 80s.

The show ran from August 20 '89 until May 22 '93, so I'd say it's safe to assume those scenes most likely occurred in the '90s.

No.
Just more evidence of why they should have had multiple people cheering and clapping for them at the checkout counter.

Were there people at the checkout counter cheering and clapping for you when you bought it?

Sort of, my former employer (Logicon) bought two of these things. The company that sold them to us was our partner in other ventures. A digilog employee brought them to our Fairfax office and everyone wanted a look. The whole staff including the maintenance staff were in awe of the portable version of the system we were currently using.

"1983 was way more of a bigger deal than having a cell phone right now"

those were satellite phones and you can still get them. and they now can be hooked to antennas for internet access

do your damn home work would you ?

----------------------------
cell phones ?

they promised when they shut down normal tv and telephone the poor would not be abused that access costs would go down and provisions would be made

i'm poor. cell phones cost $100+ / mo. instead of $20. no pay phones. obama-ites get phones they hang up on me if i want one

really telco technology was already using it. the (earlier) cell is simply a walky talky using the telco technology already in use.

today's cells are the same, but using rebranded technology names, and hacked technology so that gov and industry can spy and break things - and just plain poor coding. for example requiring frames to go outside of the frame boundry: and not telling ITUT the whole plan.

-------------------------------
the whole thing was a big fucking lie

they totally hacked at the technologies, broke many, and never stuck to the plan of providing connections for a reasonable fee

they completely fucked up

Sending and receiving letters via pigeon was much more applause worthy than buying a fucking iPhone.
