The Walk is at Kutner Park (off Germantown Road) from 5:00-6:30pm on

Complementing our counseling programs are the following services provided without cost to guests.

Sam has been at TLC off and on for almost four years. During that time, he went through a number of treatment programs, but he had trouble staying sober and keeping a job.

As a Navy veteran, he had been working with the VA to get into its recovery program, but was unable to do so.

He heard about the success another guest, Dave, had with sobriety at a Church Army program in Branson, Missouri and asked if we could send him there.

We did. After being in Branson for about a month, Sam called to let us know that he is sober and doing very well in his recovery program. He told us of the fear and tears he had the day he left to go to Missouri.

Even though his fear of change was great, his desire for a change in his life was greater.

The Lamb Center publishes a bi-monthly newsletter called the PRODIGAL to keep friends and supporters informed of how The Lamb Center is making a difference in central Fairfax as it serves the poor, hurting and homeless in our midst.

The PRODIGAL also provides information on how you, your family, church community or company can support the financial and other needs of the center.

During a recent month, the Lamb center welcomed 421 different guests. We served an average of 146 meals daily to our guests.

In our counseling program, we held 21 AA meetings, 46 Bible study discussions, and over 300 one on one life counseling sessions.

In our employment ministry, 138 guests have received employment counseling so far this year and 58 of these guests have obtained employment.

Our staff made 23 visits to churches, schools, places of business and other organizations to acquaint them with the work and needs of the Lamb Center.

The Lamb center Board of Directors continued its efforts to find a suitable location to which the center could expand and improve its services.

At the Lamb Center we do have to put up with a lot of people like Billy here.

For all his complaining, you should see what he's up to.

For example, he complains about the shower , but it was he who crapped in there and clogged the drain.

There are a million silly Billy stories. This is just one of them.

What I love about Billy is that even years after he's been kicked out, and to the best of my knowledge he's the only one so ungrateful, is that he still continues to obsess over the Lamb Center, all of the kind people whom work there, all of the churches(they all have to be horrible right), various folks whom are also homeless.

Does he have a right to? Sure. I just feel bad for Billy, as he's been on this for years, and all he's trying to do is hurt his fellow homeless human beings. Jane was always one of our more helpful guests. She was one of the first to take the initiative to clean the table off before Bible study, and would remind us when it was time to start Morning Prayer.

Jane was also a mainstay at the Bible studies. One morning during Bible study, she got up to get a cup of coffee. While she was up, another guest sat in Jane’s seat. When Jane returned, she confronted the other guest, and insisted on getting ‘her’ chair back. This was particularly surprising, as there were several other empty chairs nearby. Chairs that were as good or better than the one Jane was sitting in. Yet she demanded her chair back.

I was surprised at this. Not that two of our guests would have a confrontation over a seat, but that Jane was one of them. I just figured she would have simply sat in a different seat. This is what any of you would have done.

The incident reminded me of how out of control most of our guests’ lives truly are. Daily they struggle with what can often seem like insurmountable issues. Where am I going to sleep? Do I have time to get to The Lamb Center and get something to eat and maybe take a shower? Do I have a token for the bus? What bus goes to the library and when does it come? Little things that they can control are magnified.

I learned a lesson from a volunteer in the laundry once. A guest asked for a toothbrush, and instead of just handing him one, he asked, “Which one would you like?” It was a subtle difference, but he had honored our guest by giving him a choice. In the end, what do we care whether we gave him the red one or the green one?

I also was reminded that I too am a work in progress. I might not have picked a fight about the chair, but I sin against friends, family, and strangers over things that are just as petty.

Jane has relocated to Carolina, and she is now married to a former TLC guest and they are both employed, and they blessed us with a financial donation when they came back ‘home’ to visit us. Not every guest we serve daily has such a success story, but we are all a work in progress.

One of the things I have learned at The Lamb Center is never to put people in a box, and never to give up on anyone. We see people every day who are facing seemingly insurmountable problems. Problems that even with the assistance of several staff members, a few volunteers, and a professional are without an answer.

Before William was incarcerated, he was told us needed to enter an alcohol and drug recovery program before his court date. Although William received several one on one counseling sessions at The Lamb Center about necessary steps to recovery, he not only failed to enter a recovery program, but also missed his court date.

From behind bars William wrote that he had about six or seven weeks left before completing a recovery program there. He said he had “never actually looked at alcohol or drug abuse as a disease” and that “threw him for a loop.”

William went on to write:


“Thank you for all the help and support that you have always given me and other Lamb Center guests, I just could not recognize and would not take hold of the life raft that you were throwing out to save me until I came to jail. Tell others my story and pray they will grab TLC raft to recovery.”

Michael Anthony continues to "hold school" on how to handle a difficult, public situation when you're in one of rock's great bands. I've honestly never had an issue with the decision to fire Anthony and hire Wolfgang. If Eddie, Alex and Dave think it's more important to have Eddie's son/Alex's nephew in the band...than that's their right. And if I was in a band with my brother and my son took up an instrument, I'd want him in the band, too. It's also my right as a fan to say that Michael Anthony has been playing bass longer than Wolfgang Van Halen's been alive and will always be a better player than Wolfie.

My real problem with this whole situation is HOW it was handled. You don't let a guy who was there when the band was formed in 1974 and played with you as your ONLY bass player for 32 years "FIND OUT" he's fired second-hand at a fucking press conference.

Anthony has every reason to be bitter and talk smack and he doesn't. (Dave Mustaine, are you paying attention here?) Regardless of what you think of his ability, his career, the state of things for him now...THAT is how you deal with a situation like that.
