How do vegans get their protein?
Posted by: rvashows ()

Im worried about them. First of all, I know several people that are vegetarian and/or vegan. They look sickly! Pale skin and very thin. They're not necessarily lean, either. Most of them are skinny-fat. This is not good.

The main thing is how in the world can a vegetarian diet offer the protein that is required for the basic function of the human body? Protein is the building blocks of life. The average man requires at least 80 grams of protein a day. You ain't gonna get that from celery stalk or gluten free muffins.

The average vegan male would get his orally by sperm injection.

If they don't do it right, they don't - I use to work with a vegan who obviously was slowly starving himself - gaunt, sunken eyes, the whole bit.

There are a variety of foods like beans that can supply the right type of proteins.

Beans, nuts, lentils, quinoa, peanut butter, oatmeal, spinach, soy yogurt, tofu, brown rice.... there are plenty of ways to eat protein without eating meat.

I'm not a vegan but do drink milk shakes that have 30g of
protein. I think whey is the primary ingredient. For me
that's 60% daily requirement. Premier Nutrition Protein
from Costco. Lot's cheaper than the nutrition stores.
I dropped 20 pounds just by quitting the junk food and paying
more attention to my diet. For dinner tonight I'm having a
rib-eye with lots of fat, baked potato with butter and
sour cream. Gotta have fun sometimes.

LOL. I love those lines. You would need. 3 1/2 cups of beans to meet your RDA or 6 PB sandwiches (which would shoot your calories through the roof),

I seriously doubt there are vegans out there eating 6 peanut butter sandwiches a day to stay healthy.

Agreed, but that is how many you would need to eat to hit your RDA of protein. The calorie to protein ration does not make it an efficient source of protein.

They have hardly any! An average serving of vegetables has at most 4-6 grams of protein. If you live off that alone (not to mention you cut out dairy), you can't be possibly getting enough.

80 grams of protein is not high at all. Its whats needed for men to preserve lean muscle mass. If you're not getting at least that every other day, you are probably losing muscle. Thats what ages people as well. To most body builders, 80 grams of protein isn't even a quarter of what they need.

Women need 50-60 grams a day. I bet they are not getting that from salads.

Vegetarians may be able to get protein from fish, but strict Vegans can hardly be getting any. Fruits and veggies have very little protein. Most protein comes from lean meats such as chicken, fish, and some lean cut pork and steak. As well as eggs and peanutbutter.

The veggie diet is not enough to sustain lean muscle mass. Most people get thin, but have high body fat concentration.

I could care less. My original reply: "I'm not a vegan but do drink milk
shakes that have 30g of protein". Sunday morning: Fried eggs, 4 strips of
bacon, muffin w/butter.

I have a relative who claims to be a vegan but I caught her eating
a london broil. Sneaky.

True. However, quinoa has a complete amino acid profile.

They don't. Every Vegan dies after about two years due to protein deficiency... Veganism is actually a massive scam promoted by the Republican Industrial Machine to kill off all the hyper-liberal tree hugging hippies.

Or perhaps there are non-meat sources of protein...

Protein isn't the only issue with Vegan diets. Vitamin B-12 and Iron deficency is what is causing vegans to look like the walking dead .
Most vegetable sources of iron are hard to absorb by the body, you need meat or a suppliment. Vegetables have no B 12 whatsoever, and again, you need a meat source or a supplement.
