Last U.S. World War I veteran Frank W. Buckles dies at 110

Frank W. Buckles died Sunday, sadly yet not unexpectedly at age 110, having achieved a singular feat of longevity that left him proud and a bit bemused.

In 1917 and 1918, close to 5 million Americans served in World War I, and Mr. Buckles, a cordial fellow of gentle humor, was the last known survivor. "I knew there'd be only one someday," he said a few years back. "I didn't think it would be me."

Mr. Buckles, a widower, died on his West Virginia farm, said his daughter, Susannah Buckles Flanagan, who had been caring for him there.

Wow, I thought the last one died a few years ago. I met a WWI vet back in the 90s, the guy was a 95-year-old retired Marine gunnery sgt. who had fought in France. At the time he was perfectly healthy, didn't need a cane to walk or anything and his mond was sharp. The places he had fought at are historical legends now.

RIP, Cpl. Buckles. He had an interesting life; WWI service, and a prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippines. His last wish was for a national WWI memorial that has been stalled in Congress. Maybe not the best time for one for now fiscally, but it really needs to be done at some point. Both my grandfathers were in WW1; one with the USN, and the other, as Barney Fife would say "was on the wrong team in '18". But there ya go.

I don't usually do that, because I misspell all of the time. I just thought the context was funny.

Well, it doesn't take much to outwit me, especially for a 95-year-old Marine gunny combat vet who got into fucking bayonette fights with Germans and fought in trenches with poison gas and lived to talk about it 80 years later. The guy looked old, but knowing his history I was pretty sure he could kill me handily.

The weird thing will be when the last WWII veteran goes in about 20 years. When I was a kid, they were in their late 40s, early 50s.

You'll see WWII vets for a while.

Figure you probably had 16 or 17 year olds (if not a year younger) in the service in 1945.

That makes them now about 83. Centarians often last to 102 or 105. So we have probably a good 30 years to go.

Dad was wounded at the Bulge by the Jerries. On the other hand, my uncle was in the Afrika Korps and was captured by the Brits at Tobruk. He spent the rest of the war in Iowa and had a great time.

They interviewed a black WWII paratrooper on NPR the other day and he was saying how on his Army base the German POWs got to hang out at the base exchange and drink Coke and beer but the black US soldiers were prohibited from that part of the base. I'm not into that racial guilt crap, but that was really fucked up.
