It's tragic, but come on... it was a micro uzi, which I think has the stock that can fold over. It sounds like the boy wasn't using the stock, fired it like a pistol, didn't have the presence of mind to let go of the trigger when it started to go out of control (y'know, because he's 8), and tragedy struck.
If it was his first time firing a fully-automatic weapon, the stock should have been out, and there should have been someone behind him helping him hold it. They put (what is essentially) a machine pistol into an untrained child's hand, and now they're lamenting their own stupidity.
It's a senseless and tragic death that could have easily been avoided by anyone with an ounce of common sense.

You mean common sense as in not allowing an 8yo to fire a weapon meant for adults?

This isn't a tragedy. This is stupidity. Whatever your take on guns, the father and the instructor were idiots for letting this kid fire a weapon that he was too young to handle. This isn't a tragedy. It is gross negligence.

Well, yeah, I wouldn't put an uzi into the hands of an 8-year-old.
But let's say you do. Smartest thing is to put maybe three rounds in the magazine at first, so if it does go crazy in his hands and he doesn't know to release the trigger, it's only three rounds. Or, you could kneel down behind him and keep your hands on his, so you can help control the weapon. Or you could do both, which would be the safest way to go.
Or you can do what they did and give him a fully-loaded, fully-automatic weapon that he's never used before and take the chance that it ends badly.
