This has been a move that's been steaming ahead with a lot of support and likelihood for months now. This isn't some new grassroots idea that doesn't have legs. This happening has been all but a certain for a few months now.

You shut them down after they've been bloated from buying up the bad mortgages from the bad banks and themselves bailed out by the Fed. Their version of the 90's bailout of S&L's.

This is horrible for me. I have a bunch of shares in FNMA. I hope Obama doesn't axe Congress to shut them down.

Haven't read into it too much, but it seems strange that Obummer would want to shut down what have become essentially government run mortgage companies. They started out as GSEs and then went more or less private. Their function was essentially to back stop the private mortgage providers and set up requirements common to the industry. They did both, to the tune of billions in wasted tax money.

He needs to keep Fannie and Freddie. It is the right thing to do and he owes it to the American people.

He wants to phase it out which won't occur until one or two administrations down the road. It seems he's proposing other programs to make lending more lax and subsidze home ownership through buyer downpayment assistance programs. In a nutshell, he wants a bubble under his watch and propose responsible programs take effect after he leaves.
