Never seen that video before. That was cool as shit! Bits and pieces of the pervert went flying!

Why was this NBC's fault?

May have been a random person who's sexual impulses happened to coincide with a bait and catch operation. Man would rather take a self imposed death penalty than deal with prosecution as a sexual offender. Even though he hadn't actually done the act yet.

We don't get our money's worth on TV from all the helicopters flying around here presumably to chase down crims.

So you sympathize with an online predator?

I don't know if the guy would have actually acted on his impulses. Obviously he was completely terrified of being incarcerated. The only way he may have actually took the next step was by being baited the way he was by the police. Comforted and convinced that there was no reason to be concerned about the legal ramifications. Simultaneously lured in with online sexual advances hindering his logic.

Once in a position he was in committing suicide. The obvious fact here is if the man was willing to take a shotgun, put it in his mouth, and blow his brains into a 20 feet radius to avoid arrest, he probably wouldn't have risked such a thing on his own if not baited. They may have killed a man that was not going to act on his impulses because of the consequences.

Those are just the facts of what transpired.

Eesh, the conversation I am stoking is much too advanced for your kind. I recommend you use a brain cell or two.

Whether he is a victim or not is not what's of importance here. It's whether or not the man committing suicide to avoid arrest increases the probability the man would not have committed the crime unless he was baited in an operation.

I know this much. NBC resolved a 105 million dollar lawsuit brought on by the mans sister. I would assume that settlement was one of a very handsome sum. Obviously civil court may have considered the mans eventual fate that of a potential victim for that to have been the case.

Its a very perplexing story. Baiting and law enforcement assisted crime borderlines entrapment.

He wasnt baited. I would say from what Ive seen on the show, the vast majority of these pervs initiate the contact and the meetings. The decoy is just a submissive participant.

Everyone of these fuck nuts knows what they are getting into. You can't tell me he was duped when almost 100% of the time they have transcripts that prove the perv was made well aware the decoy was underage.

I think this guy got exactly what he deserved. Nobody's fault but his own (unless you're a candy ass liberal apologist)

We don't have the actual transcript of his conversations with the police. I would assume that it's probably not an extremely professional, submissive and outlined interaction. During and active back and forth conversation it is very difficult to remain within such perimeters, if they even exist.

The objective obviously is to exploit any potential tendencies an individual would have in such respect. I completely understand the man may have been a sexual predator or may have been one someday and the bastard is better off dead of that's the case.

My concern is with the legal system and law enforcement agencies using such schemes and methods to incarcerate people or possibly entrap them. It's a slippery slope and nothing new.

The fact is, and no one can deny this. This man may have never harmed a fly if he hadn't been lured by an operation. And the man blew his brains out as a result.

People are complex beings with very complex brains that we don't fully understand. We may be able to medicate away perversions someday. We may be instigating a reaction that they may have otherwise been able or forced themselves to contain because of the threat of jail. Instead this mans fate was to blow his brains out.

It's a complicated situation. What causes people to be sexual predators. Are some people more prone to act out on their sexual impulses than others. Do such operations cause people to act on their impulses where they normally wouldn't have? Are police carrying out such operations to incriminate people kept professional to where the criminal is not lured overly sexually into a trap? How would such operating procedures be followed by hundreds of various nationwide law enforcement jurisdictions?

It's fuckin complicated to me. I reserve judgement, I'm conflicted. Easy for you to just say fuck him, he was a sexual predator, good riddens. There's a lot more to the story I need to know to make the conclusion.

There were two suspects, one was driving and the passenger killed himself.

It didn't seem too often that two people would show up at the To Catch a Predator bait house together.

I don't know if I trust cops in these bait operations. How can you know the man would have committed a crime without help from the police? You don't. So how could you morally support such justice in a nation where we demand the presumption of innocence.

The guy blew his brains apart because he got caught doing something he KNEW was wrong and illegal and he obviously was not up to facing the consequences. If he had never left his house that night, he may still be alive today. He initiated the chain of events which led to his gray matter being splattered all over somebody's backyard.

What bothers me is he a brought a shotgun to a meeting with an underage girl he thought he was going to have sex with. I dont think that's typical of child predators.

No it doesnt. It doesnt even matter if he was baited he was going to have sex with a child. Thats not okay

The only defense would be if they lied and said the person was of age and then they were underage when they got there, thats not the case from the transcripts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for catching perverts in any legal way possible. I do have one question though, in these sting operations the perpetrator is chatting with an adult pretending to be a minor. So how then is the perpetrator charged with soliciting a minor? They were really chatting with an adult the whole time?

That's a legal question I have often wondered myself. I dont know the answer but it doesn't seem to work getting them out of trouble. Most of them end up at the Gray Bar Hilton for some period of time.

Because they dont know theyre chatting with an adult. As far as they know theyre chatting with a minor and have the intent to have sex with a minor. If you were role playing with your girlfriend or something and knew it was her you could use that as a defense as weird as that would be. But since as far as they know they were chatting with a minor, it doesnt matter who was actually on the other end the intent was to chat up a minor.

Lol yea that too. Showing up at the house destroys all possible defenses of just living out a fantasy or assuming it was an adult role playing.

I hate child predators as much as the next guy, but to film the destruction of a person's life for entertainment purposes is despicable. Equally disturbing is the pretense that it's all for a good cause.

It started out as a honest effort to do news reporting or an investigation if you will. The people that showed up ended up being so bat shit insane that it quickly became humorous.

I cant say I feel too bad for them considering what they were trying to do, but I get what youre saying. If airing it was what they needed to do in order to pay to keep it going and get these people off the streets Im okay with that. If it wasnt such a disgusting heinous act that they were stopping I would have more of a problem of it being filmed, but having to choose between a child molester being publicly shammed and a kid actually getting molested thats an easy choice for me.

In the end they did do a lot of good and if you remember on the last episode ever they took down an Assistant DA in Florida who had 10s of thousands of kiddie porn pics some of which he probably made himself.

The cops actually had nothing to do with the techniques used luring a victim for Hansen. The adult posing as a child was part of volunteers trolling kiddie websites looking for predators. The volunteers would then send the information to the cops. Cops loved the excuse to dress like shrubs,I guess.
The problem with the law and the volunteers was the lack of regulation with the tactics the volunteers used. The show used promoted all the victories but I'm not sure how many cases were thrown out because they were lured into doing something they would not ordinarily do.
Some of the comments in the youtube video indicated this was a case of carjacking not sex.

When I was on Ft. Belvoir, there was an E-5 assigned to INSCOM living in my barracks that got caught on this show. I can't remember his name, but he wanted to have a three way with a dog and the supposed little girl.

His chapter work only took a month, I don't know what his character of discharge was, but I know he had to register as a sex offender.

It doesnt matter if you would ordinarily have sex with a child or not, its attempting to have sex with a child. No cases got throw out because it wasnt their ordinary behavior, thats not a legal defense thats only ground to argue for a lesser sentence

I can simply prove your theory of entrapment wrong with one example that is equal to the "catch a predator".

Drug busts are the same thing - offer something illegal and if they buy/do it, then arrest them, case closed.

I would add that the kid rapers are even worse - they have TONS of time not to commit the crime:

Many times DAYS of emailing back and forth
Usually a long trip to the "kids" home, some are hours away
Shopping, the predators usually have evidence of their intentions hen they arrive - sex toys, condoms, alcohol and more for a minor

A drug deal is a simple"no" or "yes" on the spot, where the predator scenarios take a lot of effort, time and planning by the criminal. I would say that the predator scenarios are much worse and show a DEFINITE pedophile long before they walk to the front of the "kids" house.

Definitely no entrapment involved, not even close.

"The sting set up by NBC and Perverted Justice — a civilian watchdog group hired as a paid consultant by NBC — brought in some 20 men, who were arrested as alleged sexual predators. But the one man, the one very important man "Dateline" thought it had caught, did not show up. William Conradt, 56, an assistant district attorney in a neighboring county, did not go to the sting house even after Dateline had one of its actors call him three different times to get him to walk into the trap. Watch the Brian Ross Investigates Webcast "There’s no question that they wanted him," said Bruce Baron, the attorney representing the Conradt family in a lawsuit against NBC. "There’s no question that they would take him at any price." With Conradt not taking the bait, a decision was made to go get him at his home in the nearby town of Terrell. It was a decision that would raise questions about why the rush to arrest him on a Sunday afternoon. Former Murphy police officer Sam Love, who appeared on "To Catch a Predator" and has since left the force in disgust, says the decision was made at the suggestion of NBC’s Chris Hansen. "Their hope was that the man would come out to go to the store for something or the church or whatever, and Chris Hansen and his crew could confront him and interview him before the arrest was made," Love told ABC News. NBC and the Murphy police deny NBC played any role in the decision to make the arrest, which involved a swat team breaking down Conradt’s door when he did not answer. Conradt’s sister Patricia told "20/20" the police broke in and then headed down a hallway to the bedroom where her brother was waiting for them with a gun in his hand. "They came in, and they see him," Patricia said. "He says, ‘Guys, I’m not gonna hurt anybody.’ And then he put the gun to his head and shot." Police called in a helicopter to rush the critically injured suspect to the hospital. William Conradt died shortly after the helicopter landed at a Dallas hospital. "I understand he took his own life, but I have a feeling that he took his own life when he looked out the door and saw there were a bunch of television cameras outside," said former Murphy detective Walt Weiss, who like Love, left the force in disgust. The two former Murphy detectives say many in their department shrugged off Conradt’s death. "It didn’t matter that that person died because he was just, in their opinion, a child molester or a pervert, if you will," Weiss told ABC News. "I mean it was pushed aside and shoved under the rug." NBC and Perverted Justice have both strongly defended their actions in the case, but no one from either organization would agree to appear on "20/20." In a "Dateline" update broadcast just a few days ago, reporter Chris Hansen offered a new possible explanation for Conradt’s suicide, saying "they found child pornography on his computer" after his death. As for the other 23 alleged sexual predators arrested that day, the district attorney, John Roach, has thrown out their cases, saying the police’s reliance on NBC "Dateline’s" investigation compromised the evidence obtained. Murphy police chief Bill Myrick adamantly denies this."
No entrapment?

Anybody ever wonder what the aftermath of this is for the perps caught showing up to (what they believe to be) kids' homes?

Take this guy from season 2 which was filmed in Herndon, VA. They got a rabbi to walk through the door who lived in Potomac, MD and worked at a synagogue in that area. Evidently he likes 13 year old boys. Below is the clip of him meeting Chris Hanson.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lo-bWWg2pzE

Here's an article from the Washington Post written relatively recently (Oct, 2012) that goes into some detail regarding his attempts to attend synagogue. From what I understand, the above clip aired in 2005 he was sentenced to 78 months in jail and thus the below article would not have been published all that long after his release. Life isn't easy for these guys after this happens.

No no entrapment. You cant be entrapped by private citizens. If the police wanted to listen to Hansen thats on them.

Lets not pretend like the guy did nothing wrong, as far as he knew he was discussing sex with a minor and probably send naked photos all of which are illegal in their own right.

No matter how you look at it though Dateline isnt Law Enforcement, they cant entrap anyone. Just like if someone else breaks into your house and shows the police your stash of drugs its not an illegal search because the police didnt do it. That person should go to jail as well for breaking in, but the evidence against you wont be thrown out.

Damn, it's been that long since those busts? Seems like yesterday.

One of those pervs was a neighbor of mine, who I fortunately never knew. Heard he kept a low profile after that.

Look for a new thread.

If you meet the supposedly 12 girl and sit and talk awhile but don't talk about sex or condoms etc. If the cops bust in do you still go to jail?

give it a shot and see the results

i hope this was a troll post, if not the ignorance is strong in this one

and to "Life isn't easy for these guys after this happens." - are you fucking kidding? how about the life of the CHILD that gets raped if they had not ben caught in the first place? they should have a shitty life on anyone and everyones radar + shitlist

you are defending a child rapist with that statement - only reason their sentences are so short is because they were stopped before they physically raped a child

the guy who shot himself did because he knew he was going to jail and did not want to - take fucking TV cameras to every child rapists' house for every arrest - he was not some angel that just messed up a little an chatted with a minor for a bit - he had child porn and had done who knows what

you want to fuck kids? you get shamed, jailed, legally trapped anything to stop them, period

just like the NSA taps - nothing wrong with catching bad guys, do not think you have a right to private electronic communication, only crazy fucks think that we are losing freedoms when it does not affect anyone in their daily lives at all

the guy who shot himself - you want to say "well he ONLY had child porn on his computer and that aint so bad" - bullshit

entrapment? LOL - if you do not have the ability to ignore, not or disregard ANY offers from minors, then YOU are responsible for your actions -- even if they message you 100 times

pathetic dumbasses

The setup is in the chat room where they talk about arranging a sexual encounter. If they don't show up for the encounter, the johns can't be charged with attempting to have sex with a minor. They pursued one guy who didn't show up and tried to set up a confrontation with the police. He committed suicide.

Yea they can only be charged with a slew of laws against sexual chat and sending nude photos to a minor, youre right they should just be let go. Its one thing if its an 19 year old with a 17 year old, these are grown adults going after kids under the age of 15

Take it easy there guy. I'm not defending anybody. How is pointing out a simple statement of fact backed with an in-depth article from the Washington Post defending this guy? Don't get carried away here.

FWIW, I think it great the public knows who these guys are. It prevents them (or at least makes it less likely, IMO) from doing something like that again. The public humiliation also provides a deterrent for others who may be inclined to go out and try to do this themselves.

OK I'm just referring to the Dateline show. Chris Hanson said something to the affect as C'mon you had plenty of time to tell the 18 year old girl posing as a 12 year old girl that you were not interested in having sex as if he would be let off the hook.

These were stings. No child was raped.

In all likelihood, these stiffs (no pun intended) probably couldn't find a kid unless the kid threw themselves at them as in the stings.

As for letting these guys off and just getting off with being humiliated, they really can't be outed unless the law takes its course and prosecutes these perverts.

WTF, am I insinuating exactly? That it's unfair that these people are scrutinized because of their appearance on Dateline?

You're the one who thinks I'm suggesting they are unfairly ostracized. That's your interpretation of it.

It's really hard to be fair about anything concerning sex offenders, but I'm going to try.

While I'm sure there's still plenty of child exploitation going on, consider that basically everyone 12 and up has a cell phone with a camera on it. There's more than a couple stories out there about kids getting caught sending each other naked pictures of themselves and being charged with possession of child pornography or distribution of child pornography. If a 17 year-old girl sends her 18 year-old boyfriend a picture of her tits, that's child pornography according to the law. Not every picture of an underage kid was taken in a dingy basement by a bunch of old perverts holding them hostage.

Also, I could flip through my high school freshman yearbook and point out about ten girls in my class that had 18+ year-old boyfriends. That was not so much "molestation" as it "backwoods culture." Several of them even got married to their older beau, squeezed out a few kids, and are still together today.

As far as Perverted Justice goes, they have (or had) rules in place specifically to avoid accusations of entrapment. However, someone made a point I can agree with; how many of these guys would have actually acted on it if they hadn't had a "fourteen year-old girl" telling them that they can do anything to her if they come over. I think I've seen a couple logs where the flirting starts before she says her age. Yes, a smart man would instantly cease all contact, but there are a lot of stupid men out there. Some of them are not trying to fuck her BECAUSE she's underage, they're trying to fuck her because she says she wants them to. They have caught a couple of really sick fucks that should never be allowed to see the light of day again, but I don't think some of these guys are the hardcore pedophiles Hansen makes them out to be.

I'm all for the idea of public shaming, but after they've been given their due process. The whole situation is designed to be as damning as possible, so they're walking into the courtroom guilty until proven innocent. That's not how the system is supposed to work.

tl;dr - Chris Hansen's a dick sometimes.

The Asperger's is strong with this one here. In particular the inability to realize that this is clearly a source of amusement to me.

I'm all for closing gaps between peoples' online lives and their real ones especially in instances like this. Just Google search your own name if you don't believe me.

@Mr.Mephisto, I think there are laws on the books that greatly reduce the penalties regarding statutory rape if the age difference is 3 years or fewer. I don't think too many reasonable people would equate an 18 year old senior dating a 16 year old sophomore with the stuff on Dateline.

I could be wrong but I would think instances of prosecution in the case of 15-16 with an 18 year old are quite rare.

Regarding Chris Hanson being a prick; there's no question that he goes out of his way to humiliate these guys. The two primary reasons IMO are:

1) entertainment + ratings - which, let's face it, watching somebody get their lives ruined so we can be amused for an hour is kind of fucked up but such is human nature.

2) deterrent - I genuinely believe that people out there who may be on the fence as to whether or not they want to pull a stunt like this may opt not to after seeing the added risks involved. (meeting Chris Hanson!)

I don't know about the different penalties. It's not exactly something I've ever cared about enough to look up.

As a deterrent, it'll work on the bozos who really think some strange kid wants to have sex with them after a couple chats on the internet. However, it will make the actual, dangerous predators just stay off the internet. You can tell some of these guys don't see it as "rape" since both parties are apparently interested. They acknowledge that they can get in trouble for it, but they don't see themselves as forcing the "kid" to do anything the kid doesn't want to do. The predators I'm more concerned about are the guys who know to stay off the internet and hang around your playgrounds and schools.

There is a fine line between sting operations and police entrapment. Defense lawyers usually can have a field day with cases like these. However, the stigma is too strong with sex offenses that even accusations can ruin lives.

Bottom line, these men thought they were going to meet up with little girls and had explicit conversations with them in chat rooms.

Sadly its becoming more common, but anyone with common sense can see that two high school kids together is no where near the level of what dateline was doing. There was a reason why they always said the kid was under 15 as it removes any chance of people saying its not a big deal or arguing for leniency if they were say 17.

I think youre spot on with that. First and foremost it made the network money which is what the network cares about, lets face it MSNBC desperately needed a show people actually watched.

As for Chis Hansen personally he may have cared more about the deterrent factor, the child watch group was definitely motivated by that and catching people. The public shame will hopefully stop those guys, and people aware of it may think twice about if theyre being set up or not. In the end if it made any one think twice and not go through with it the show left a positive impact which is really all you can ask for for something like that.
