Republican Health Care Reform
Date: March 11, 2010 11:41AM

So Obama has incorporated the Republican recommendation of using private sector auditors to go after Medicare fraud with the expectation that these private auditors get to keep a portion of what they are able to save taxpayers. In theory, this sounds like a great idea. In practice, this is going to be a disaster.

Specifically, in the first few years, you can expect profit-driven auditors to go after even legitimate doctors to get their pound of flesh. This is going to create a paperwork and legal nightmare for physicians that make Trial Lawyers look like Dixie cup salesmen.

Next, expect doctors to either be driven out of the profession by this increased risk or to drop Medicare entirely. In either case, older Americans will still effectively lose Medicare.

On the plus side, this will save Medicare money. On the downside, this is going to create a huge political liability for anyone associated with it. If the Dems pass it and Obama signs it, they are completely nuts.

Yeah, I have never agreed with this practice - this is a stupid idea. I would almost have to believe that Obama is embracing it so he can say he included a republican idea - and then point out later how bad it turned out.

But this is bad no matter who does it. It lends to the whole "draconian government" impression and is not helpful.
