crazy "natural" medicine mother on the loose!

dirty hippies. >:(

yes, i've added my own commentary.

Quote
Cancer battle pair flee US police
An alert has gone out to police forces across the US to search for a mother who fled with her cancer-stricken teenage son to avoid chemotherapy.

Colleen Hauser told a Minnesota judge she wished to treat her son Daniel's cancer with natural healing methods before she disappeared with him.

She failed to attend a court hearing on Tuesday after an x-ray showed Daniel, 13, had a tumour in his chest.

Doctors say he will probably die without conventional treatment.

He has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a highly curable form of cancer when treated with chemotherapy and radiation. <-- not if he's dead first

But he and his parents rejected chemotherapy after a single treatment, Colleen Hauser saying that putting toxic substances in his body violated the family's religious convictions.

Sheriff Rich Hoffmann in Brown County said that the boy's father, Anthony, was co-operating with investigators as an arrest warrant was issued for Mrs Hauser.

He was quoted by some US media outlets as saying the pair might be in California, heading for Mexico.

Court order

"I just wish we could get to Colleen and tell her to come in," said Sheriff Hoffmann.

"This is not going to go away. It's a court order."

Speaking at the family's farm near Sleepy Eye, a town of 3,500 about 80 miles (130km) from Minneapolis, Mr Hauser said his wife and son had left without telling him their plans, and that he had not heard from them.

He said he hoped his wife would either get their son treatment for his illness or would bring him home.

"If he's being cared for, and it's going to help him, I think it's going to be a good thing," he said, quoted by the Associated Press news agency.

Colleen Hauser said she had been treating the boy's cancer with herbal supplements, vitamins, ionised water and other natural alternatives. <-- oh come on, wtf?!

She earlier told a judge she wished to treat the disease with methods advocated by an American Indian religious group known as the Nemenhah Band. <-- yeah, sure worked with smallpox

The group's founder said Mrs Hauser had made a mistake by running away from the law.

Phillip Cloudpiler Landis, who calls himself the Band's principal medicine chief, said: "You don't solve anything by disregarding the order of the judge."

Then there's this too. More religious crackpots that chose prayer over science to save their child.

Hope they throw the mother in jail for reckless endangerment.

Seems like the Nemenhah Band is a scam itself...the leader of the cult has been accused of defrauding investors in some organic mushroom investment.

How do people get involved in these fringe groups anyway?

This is why skepticism and critical thinking need to be taught in school - as early as possible. With a critical examination of the empirical evidence, it's obvious that these 'natural' cures are simply snake oil.

I worked at a place in Michigan a long time ago that was owned by a so called preacher. One of his workers/followers got bone cancer in his leg and they told him if he preyed enough he would not need medical treatment.
After several months his leg had to be amputated and they kicked him out of church for not believing.

I have mixed feelings about this after watching friends who subjected their children to chemo, radiation and surgeries in hopes the doctors were right that the cancer could be cured with "modern treatment."

One child survived, but two others did not. The children were quite literally tortured by the treatment. Ironically, the younger the child the more resilient they are.

This is is a horrible thing for any parent to face. Throughout the treatment, I've never seen such incredibly brave children, or pained and devastated parents. Even if the first round is successful, there is the constant fear of recurrence.

Holistic medicine may not be the choice of many, but at the same time some of the "modern" cancer treatments in the US are barbaric and run a close second to death.

Parents should have the right to chose medical options for their children, even if the choice is not shared by others. Judges and the court system can not be held liable if forced "traditional" treatment fails, yet parents are found negligent if they opt for an alternative treatment.

Judges and the court system would serve the public better if they "forced" traditional treatment for people who WANT the treatment but can't afford it. Are their lives of any greater or lesser significance than this boy?

I think each case has to be evaluated individually. I do not think a parent has literal life and death control over a child..so it is proper and necessar in some cases for the medical and judicial systems to intervene to save a child from his/her parent's ignorance.

I have a bit of ionised water before logging in to FFXU. It seems to help.

This is not conducive to your pro-choice stance.

If the child is being beaten or raped, then yes, I think it's appropriate for the government to help the child.

However, this instance is more about a family's choice based on their beliefs. I think it's fucking stupid and I feel bad for the kid, but if I want my rights and beliefs and choices respected, I need to respect those of others. No matter how retarded or misguided they may be.

Let the family do what they want, and let the family deal with the consequences.

There is no inconsistency in my beliefs...I do not believe an unborn child is protected under the Constitution of the US until it can sustain itself outside the womb unassisted. This child can do that. We do not condone cruelty to children...withholding needed medical care is cruelty.

This child can't sustain himself unassisted. The question the parents have is the best way to assist him, and they're making what they feel is the right choice. Whether or not we agree with it, we should still respect their decision.

Hey...and I have absollutely no problem respecting the beliefs of adults when they make decisions about their well being...however, under 18..at times..society must step in.

I had a Baptist mother-in-law who said my sickness at the time was brought on for not being a better Christian. Her husband was a Southern Baptist preacher who completed his studies at Wake Forest and she was a teacher. Crazy to say the least.

But this isn't being done with any cruel intent. They're doing what they truly think is best. The government should not be dictating the choices people make about their health.

Again, you seem to have no understanding of the ramifications of these seemingly innocuous cases; if the government is able to dictate the medical treatments of citizens, especially with regards to children, it makes it much easier to push the pro-life agenda.

For example, "In So-and-so vs. some dumbass hippie family, it was decided that the child was unfit to make decisions regarding his health, and the courts did not agree with the parent's choice, imposing their own orders for proper medical treatment. We, the pro-lifers, submit that unborn children are unfit to make decisions, and the parent's choice to get an abortion is not in the best interest of their unborn child, and blah blah blah legalese."

It's the slippery slope; rights and freedoms are not taken away all at once, they are slowly eroded until you wake up one day and say, "What the fuck happened?"

Yes it is...but the Patriot Act...and other policies of the Bush Administration which Obama seems to be approving are a much greater threat. At least with this "threat" maybe a kid gets to live.

No, I had neuromas (?) in my feet that felt like knives cutting in my feet every time I walked. Surgery removed the calluses from my veins between my toes and I was better.

Dear Grivis and McPissedOn...

I dont think I was the first one to make the case of a poor boy needing medical attention a case of diminshed freedom...

It's the slippery slope; rights and freedoms are
> not taken away all at once, they are slowly eroded

I restate my case...the boys health is more important then any slippery slope that we already on.

But it is related to the attempt by McPissedOn's attempt to try ane wrap this boy kids medical condition around some bigger issues leading to the demise of all our freedoms.

Red herring.
This means exactly what you think it means: introducing irrelevant facts or arguments to distract from the question at hand.

Liberty's Kids is an animated series on DVD explaining the "Making of the Nation" targeting kids 8-14.

I bet even Vince would understand the content, and who knows, after watching the series, he might even have the "ability to grasp the big picture."
