That sucks. He definitely had his own style. I'll bet he had some interesting stories.

I never was a huge Morrison fan, but I listen obsessively when "Light My Fire" comes on knowing he's pulling half the rhythm section with his left hand.

Riffs like hell with his right and never misses a beat.

Riders on the Storm was always a good song. Ray M. gave the Doors that creepy night lounge sound thing they had. He also appeared on a Wierd Al parody of the Doors:

Queen of the Highway is another one that comes to mind when I think of Manzarek. Him jamming on the keyboard sorta makes the whole song work.

The Doors...a band so good they didn't need a bass player. There's great footage of Densmore playing "The End" live with a 4 piece trap. You can take your Neil Pearts and Keith Moons and cram 'em up your cram hole...

Manzarek showed the keys could be central instrument in the rock arena. He was not the best but simply a pioneer. He is gone but the music is forever.

How many bass players does it take to put in a light bulb?

None, the keyboard player can do it with his left hand.

Loved his style, way ahead of his time. LA Woman is still one of my faves.

I saw Tangerine Dream in Philly last fall and they did agood cover of Crystal Ship, Edgar Froese on the keyboard doing Manzarek's organ part. Another great song by the Doors. The music stands up even when played by other people on other instruments. In fact, for those of you who don't like Morrison you may like the Doors better when it's covered without his voice.

Morrison was a super talented songwriter and had a great vocal and stage prescence. I've always thought he had kind of a self-important douche side with the whole "American Poet" angle.

Case in point is his redo of a great song in that slow spoken-word thing

I thought the idea of the Doors with Ian Astbury or whoever was kind of silly, but I wish I saw them now, just to have seen the original band.

I never understood the hate for that band after their second album. The debut was great but come on. The rest of their discography was pretty great too. rolling stone getting it wrong again.

By that time Morisson was starting to get pretty racist and developing a nazi-like attitude. not really in his songwriting per se, but he was looking toward the white power movement for his inspiration.

Morrison Hotel was by far the band's best work.

I'd have to agree. And even though some people hate it, I think The Soft Parade is a great album too. The Doors hit their peak on their last 3 albums, IMO (Morrison Hotel/Soft Parade/LA Woman).
