How did the Dave Matthews Band become so popular?
Posted by: Cvilleleader ()

How did a medicore no-talent bland as hell musical group like Dave Matthews become so famous? Its puzzling to me that they could ever be famous. I hear people at open mics that are better. Anyone have any ideas?

DMB is the 90's version of Steely Dan in that they both came along at a time when people were looking (listening) for something outside of what was currently being served up as popular. True, there were and are many such bands with a unique sound...I don't know that I would label either as alt-rock as the industry has defined alt-rock but they offered an alternative.

I was never a jihadist fan of DMB but, I'll always be sorry I didn't catch one of their shows in the late 90's. It's always a great time to catch a band at their creative peak or even pre-peak

Don't you dare lump DMB in with Steely Dan. SD was a GREAT band.

True Dat!
I'm not a huge Steely Dan fan, but I know they're all expert musicians and no on in DMB is equal to a pimple on any member of Steely Dan's ass.

I think DMB has been discussed ad nauseam here on FFU in past threads. The overall consensus is they suck.

Steely Dan sucks. It's like the kind of music two fags listen to before they fuck each other up the ass.

Sounds like you've had a few of those romantic evenings yourself. Did something go wrong the night you and your gay lover were listening to Steely Dan? Don't blame your breakup on them.

The two biggest reasons DMB got famous are alcohol consumption and pot.

It is not a drink. It is "A type of (fictional) Japanese dildo. From William Burroughs' infamous 1959 book Naked Lunch."

496, for someone who normally posts classy and inciteful content, you picked a strange time to get butt-hurt...relax.

Is there nothing but extremism left anymore? "This over here is fantastic! But that over there is crap."

I like Steely Dan. I respect DMB. Their career paths are similar.

It was the early 90s and they were a bit of an alternative to grunge acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The FM radio rotation of "Ants Marching" with the audience chiming in made listeners want to be with the rest of the hipsters of the time. But jeez that was 20 years ago,

Jam bands like Phish and Blues Traveler were huge back then, and the Grateful Dead were still around too. DMB sorta dovetailed into that scene. Those fans were hippies, not hipsters. Hipsters were listening to Pavement and Superchunk back then.

Dead fans are hippies.

Some DMB fans are hippies, but many are college douchebag fratboy "bro" types.

Oh no doubt about that, but I disagree with the DMB/hipster comment. Cuz if there's one thing hipsters hate, it's bands that are mainstream. DMB wasn't part of the "cool indie" scene, hipsters were too busy worrying about stuff like the next Olivia Tremor Control seven inch or if the chick from Yo La Tengo was recording a side project with Thurston Moore.

the Jam Bands are all shit. Literally dirty horrible shit. I know its all crusty hippies and Trustafarians white guys with dread locks playing hacky sack and beating on drums then jumping in the Honda or Toyota their parents bought them and rushing back to philosophy class. OR Frat Bros and Sorority girls who like to suck nitrous from balloons and get "wasted" and trade bootlegs of Dave's Jam #5,999.65 jam on Tripping BILLY. I cannot stand Phish either. Its a joke band thats outlasted the joke by 30 years. There was a girl I was dating who was into Dave matthews and she said her and her friends would fill up a car drive to wherever Dave was playing and it was a total sex thing cuz like "dave is so haaaaawt" Barf. Spin doctors? meh too much too soon and too goofy. the whole scene was a joke. Blues traveler? Im glad the bass player died. I wish that would have put an end to that band but like a rotten jam band Zombie they shuffle on and on and on and on and on and on and on and Jam some more.

I saw Phish some time around 95 or 96. During the second set they announced that a special guest would be joining them on stage.

Yup, it was Dave Matthews.

And they played some Bob Marley song.

It was the most hippy jamband thing I've ever witnessed.

having been to college and been to parties and inevitably someone would play O.A.R or PHISH. I would have to get drunker or wander over to the stereo and change it up to something else.

Woof its always white guys with dreads who are into reggae. that IS the ultimate jam band moment.

A lot of jam bands are super talented and have very astute soundboard guys. Though they improvise, many seem to have that perfectionist attitude.

But it doesn't matter how well they play, their fretboard dexterity, the complicated rhythms or obscure chords- if the shit don't rock it don't rock.

I only ever liked that "drink too much" song by DMB, sounds hard to play, nice horn riffing.

Everything else I've heard of them sounds like BUTT.

The vocals are that stupid thinky/dreamy "aren't-I-fucking-clever" style. What do you do to music like this? I haven't found a drug for it.

Not a fan but they have/had some good musicians. Bands like that tend to appeal more to other musicians. Seemed to me they flirted slightly with being progressive but didn't stray too far. I haven't heard anything that wasn't on the radio though.

I can actually agree with this. They're definitely accomplished musicians, and DM seems like a pretty solid acoustic guitar player.

That being said, I hate their music. DMB holds a special status in my music collection. It's the ONLY cd in my old collection that I personally REFUSED to rip into mp3 for my itunes library.

I'm not even sure why I own it- and I owned plenty of crap- but I personally refused to even convert the thing. That's the ONLY album or artist I can say that for.

There are MANY expert musicians out there. The problem is very few of them have a soul. Many got into music for all the wrong reasons (chicks, money, etc...). But to me, those who truly wanted to play music for the fun of it and to do something really good and original are the ones who seem to produce the best and longest careers.

Also, I don't think just singing, or playing an instrument is enough. Most of the great ones were also songwriters, producers, and/or composers.

The problems I've always had with DMB is the shitty tone/style of the drums and DM's voice. I usually can't even make it through an entire song.

Sorry, I don't have exemplary musical skills and I never suggested that DMB doesn't. Music is not my career and I don't get paid for it. At one time I did and I think I could hang in there with just about any jamband and maybe even some decent rock groups. These days I just noodle around with my friends and fam.

Thanks for your interest in my music though.

They were/are good, though. Not really my style of music, and yes, played to death on radio, too.

Can't stand Dave Matthew's stupidly affected vocals. Sing with a real fucking voice or don't sing at all. That warbly half-yodel sounds like shit.

Miles Davis was a jazz musician. DMB is alt-rock hippie music. Comparing those two to each other is apples and oranges.

Everybody in DMB is a talented, capable musician. Just because they're not playing the type of music you want to listen to doesn't make them any less talented. Like I said, I'm not a fan of their music, but those guys could play circles around any other musician I know.

College band that made it semi-big through sheer dumb luck in a shitty music market. Sorry, but talent don't mean shit if the music you play is terrible. Also, ditto the remark on some of the worst vocal stylings ever to be recorded. Terrible, just terrible!

I think you mean to say, "Talent don't mean shit if I don't like the music they play." They are clearly doing something that some people enjoy. I never understood the Macarena or Gangnam Style, but that doesn't stop millions of people from enjoying it.

I wonder if either of the songs would have been "hits" had the videos not accompanied them. I think this is the case with a lot of music these days.

Yes they are all musicians. it doesnt matter what catagory you put them in they all play instruments and maybe in different styles but JAzz musicians and Jam band musicians play improvisational music. They play on the fly. The problem is that Dave Matthews and his cohorts play in circles and are Boring. Miles ripped it apart and played things that sounded amazing and innovative. They could not come close to Miles. The DMB fools are just retreading things other more talented and creative people have come up with. They are terrible regurgitaters.

I've never heard of or imagined a band or artist that you couldn't say that about. I've also seen Tool launch into 15 minute jam sessions, but I never once thought, "These guys suck because they're not as good as Miles Davis."

Some of the DMB guys have a jazz background, too. I doubt Miles Davis had a soft alt-rock background. Advantage: DMB.

I once saw Maynard pull out a trumpet right in the middle of "Prison Sex" and play the entire Sketches of Spain album. It was actually just as good as Miles Davis. The crowd was going nuts.

Miles Davis would create new genres and regularly re-constitute his band re-tooling and re-imagining what is possible for music. the DMB guys just tread water on the same genre for decades and dont expand anything but their wallets. Other artists have made whole careers out of a genre that Miles explored and abandoned after a few years. Advantage Miles.

I dont know what a Maynard is but if he can play the entire sketches of spain album then he should be showered with Dill pickles and stripped naked and worshiped as a new God among Pinatas.

Are you under contract with his estate or something? Liking DMB or Davis better is completely subjective. I'm sure someone who gives a mouse's ass about DMB could give you examples of DMB's impact on the world of music, but I'm not going to waste my time with that.

The original question was, "How did they get so popular?" The only correct answer is by writing music that millions of people will buy and making the right connections. That's how any band gets to be popular. The thread is now about whether or not they're talented, and they are. It takes talent to write songs and play as well as they do. They're talented, Miles Davis is talented, Mozart is talented, and I've seen some guys at open mic that were talented.

There's a difference between being talented, being gifted, and being successful. You can't measure talent by success, and not all gifted people are talented.

by being bland and safe alternative to the alternative punk rock that was popular in the early 90's

or by selling their souls to the devil at the corssroads at midnight and waging jihad on bootleg tapers. There are a LOT of ways not just ONE correct way.

That's how any band gets to

Any band? ANY band? no. some bands are amazing and die on the vine. DMB blanded out got popular so hippies kids could have a safe haven and jam band of their own away from the lecherous predatory Grateful dead hippies who exploited them on the dead scene.

The thread is now about whether or not

Of course DMB is incredibly talented, as already shown throughout this thread (thanks for the cool thread btw!)!
