Why didn't they think of this?

I think a job in the Bush budget department might be awaiting this woman!

From USA Today:

Once again, USA TODAY had an article about how the airlines are trying to save fuel or have their customers pay extra for incidentals. I believe that the airlines are blinded by greed.

A simple way to save weight and fuel would be to remove some rows of seats in each plane.

Just think of the consequences if six rows are removed: Six rows multiplied by six seats at 250 pounds per seat (including seat, passenger and baggage). This would equal 9,000 pounds, which is 4.5 tons.

It should take less fuel to fly each plane if 4.5 tons are removed from the equation.

Don't forget the added advantages of more legroom, less harried flight attendants, quicker check-in and maybe even room for more than one package of pretzels per person.

The accountants at the airlines should get out their calculators and find the right configuration for each type of plane. Then we might return to the times when flying was more enjoyable.

If you were a pilot and the name "pilot" was not an alias, you would know that there is a building just off the Dallas Airport that houses a group called SABRE. In this building actually it was in the basement, are about 40 guys who do calculations all day long regarding airlines. How slow can the plane go and not be too late - so we can save on fuel, How much fuel should we put on the plane, what do we do with extra planes, how do we efficiently get parts and personnel to where they need to be. It is called Mathematical Optimazational Modeling amongst other things.

The calculations you speak have been done I am sure

If were really a lover of radios, and the name radiophile was not just an alias, you might have recognized the original post as sarcasm. The intro line "I think a job in the Bush budget department might be awaiting this woman!" was a dead giveaway. But, once again, you stumbled on your reading comprehension.

Question, do you physically love radios or just emotionally? Do they talk back to you? I bet you are the type that has deep meaningful conversations with your radio.

No but my radio has deep intellectual conversations with me. I call the personalities inside my radio several different pet names - BBC, NPR, CBC, WNBC (she only comes out after dark) etc

What the hell is your problem? The poster identified him/herself as a pilot. The post was about airplanes. Should the "pilot" have commented on Sabre and what they do and not leave it up to me? Maybe the pilot should have. But the "pilot" (an Alias) just did not know. Pardon me for trying to enlighten the good people of fxu.

And what is the "Bush Budget department" you speak of? Are you refering to the Government Accountability Office? I do have the highest regards for the job they do. They speak the truth when no one else listens. http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d07525t.pdf

Look, moron, he was making a joke about the fact that the woman is clueless and should work in the Bush budget department. It is a pretty simple joke that shouldn't have to be spelled out. Obviously in your case it does. As for the budget department, I would assume that the original poster was referring to OMB (the Office of Management and BUDGET). GAO is the Government Accountability Office and is part of the legislative branch, so it could hardly be referred to as the "bush budget office." You can't even buy a clue.....

Yes, but following your logic the weight saved assumes those seats would otherwise be occupied. 36 seats gone that would have been occupied = 36 fares lost. Something tells me those 36 fares more than compensate for the marginal fuel consumption cost.

I am so gay. I am a man and I love men. I wear womens underwear and on Sundays wear a dress and a pretty hat to church.

Wow, I really didn't think this post needed explaining, but I guess I over-estimated at least a few people. First off, as Driver explained, the original post was sarcasm! Frankly, I was surprised that a major national newspaper would print a letter to the editor that was so bereft of anything useful.

As the title of the post 'Why didn't they think of this?' was supposed to convey, of course the airlines HAVE already thought of this. I assume the reason my knees are crammed into the seat in front of me on every flight I take is because some pointy headed nerd with a calculator has done some figuring that shows that if you INCREASE the number of seats on each plane you will collect additional fares that will more than offset the increase in fuel costs.

The description of Utopia in the air that the letter writer described was so laughable that it reminded me of the kind of thinking we've seen from the Bush administration, which is why I mentioned the job in the Bush budget office. You know, tax cuts for everybody will make us all rich, candy and flowers from Iraqis, etc. etc.

Finally, with respect to your strange obsession with anonymous posters who use, SHOCK!, aliases (btw, what the fuck do you think 'Radiophile' is?), I suggest you get over it and find something else to fret about. The rules of this board allow anonymous people to post without registering and that's how I choose to post. If Cary wants to change that rule, he will. Yes, I post using different aliases all the time--because I can! If a post I am making has nothing to do with other posts I have made, I use a different alias. In case it isn't obvious (which I guess you have to be careful about here) I am indeed not a pilot. Sue me!

I did not get your sarcasm, nor did I attack you personally - except accussing you of not being a pilot - and it appears I was right.

I simpley provided the good readers at fxu some information I happen to be privy to. I have been to SABRE and know much of what the Operations Research group does.

So then you made the inane statement that because of my name, I should understood your sarcasm. This is called a Non Sequitor - look it up.

Then you accuse me of physically loving radios. You are the attack dog, not me.

Then you post under a new name - and call me a moron.

The internet was originally designed for the "usefull exchange of information". I try to keep that in mind. You on the other hand have never exchanged any usefull information. You are at your best spewing hatred. Sad it really is.

Uh, dude, Driver was the one who called you a moron and made the statement about radios--not me. I do post under multiple names but when I make multiple posts in the same thread I generally use the same one.

So we are supposed the think it was not you agreeing with yourself when another anonymous poster agrees with something moronic you said?

I have had a change of heart. Everything Radiophile says is true. I was so wrong.

Yes, Driver and Pilot are the same - me.

I am so ashamed of myself. Please forgive me. Well I got to run. Time my meeting with my other Log Cabin Republicans.

Yes, imagine this Radiofag, there might be more than one person in the world that actually thinks you are a moron. A conspiracy minded nutjob such as yourself should not find it too difficult to comprehend that there are many people who think you are an intellectual flea.

If you actually read the original post, and you actually were halfway smart, and you actually understood the post and the point of the post, you would have most likely AGREED with it. It was a slam at the Bush administration. You know, that administration you love to lambast?!?!

Now, get back to your important correspondence with Michael Riconosciuto.

Also, you never denied physically loving radios.

Another anonymous poster calling me a fag... How unusual. I wonder if "driver" is an alias for someone else.

It isn't an alias for anything. I drive a car, hence I am a driver. Get it? You molest radios, hence you are a radiofag, er phile
