Priebus, Boehner, and Cantor campaigned for austerity, yet when it happens, they cry and complain. The three musketeers of fiscal hypocrisy.

Amen!

Republicans say they have these great plans, yet when their plans are put in place and all hell falls apart they quickly try to blame others.

The government budget cuts, such as the FAA cuts, WERE MANDATED BY A REPUBLICAN PLAN.

Did some democrats agreed? Yes, after republicans put a gun to their heads and said "PASS THIS PLAN OR WE WILL SHUTDOWN THE ENTIRE GOVERNMENT!"

Sequestration was Obama's baby. He thought it up, proposed it to Congress, pushed for it and signed it into law.

Also, when did we know that Sequestration was going to happen? December of 2011.

What did these agencies do to prepare for it? Nothing.

DoJ actually went out and paid $165 Million last fall for a prison in IL that is still unused and unnecessary.

Lack of preparation is to blame here and that blame lies at the feet of every federal manager.

Email tells feds to make sequester as painful as promised

By Stephen Dinan

The White House announced Tuesday that it is canceling tours of the president’s home for the foreseeable future as the sequester spending cuts begin to bite and the administration makes good on its warnings of painful decisions.

Announcement of the decision — made in an email from the White House Visitors Office — came hours after The Washington Times reported on another administration email that seemed to show at least one agency has been instructed to make sure the cuts are as painful as President Obama promised they would be.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the internal email, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service official Charles Brown said he asked if he could try to spread out the sequester cuts in his region to minimize the impact, and he said he was told not to do anything that would lessen the dire impacts Congress had been warned of.

There is no money shortage at FAA. Or most other agencies for that matter.

Here's how this works...

You have a budget. The budget breaks down the money for an agency into various programs (e.g., air traffic control, administration, etc.) Within those various programs you have various subcategories - salaries, contractor costs, systems development, etc. The budget(s) (you have 3 - the agencies' wish list, the administration's wish list, then Congress' final actual budget) stand as general guidance for how money is to be spent.

Congress then authorizes specific funds to be spent (generally) along the lines of the same categories.

All they have to do is reprogram funds. This is not some extraordinary feat. It's routinely done when things change relative to what was expected in the authorized budget.

Saying that the FAA has no money to pay air traffic controllers yet has plenty of money elsewhere is about like:

"Sorry, I can't pay my rent this month."

"But didn't you just buy a boat?"

"Yes, but that's money from my boat fund."

So next time you hear someone whining about how some agency has no funds to do some mission-critical function, you can tell them to STFU.

Feds Dropping $152,000 to Study Voice Therapy for Transgenders. What Sequester?
Posted by Darla Dawald, National Director on April 24, 2013 at 1:37pm in

It's so great to see the US has its priorities straight! And this is our (the taxpayers) problem why?

By Duane Lester

No, FAA, you can’t have more air traffic controllers.

The federal government has to spend that money studying voice therapy for transgenders:

I can’t get a job because my voice gives me away. (Photo: DeityProvident/Flickr)

(Couldn't have anything to do with the bad makeup job or the fact that YOU are a man trying to be a woman could it?)

The federal government is spending $152,000 to study “voice therapy” for transgenders, saying it is incumbent to being “accepted as one’s preferred gender.”

“This study will illuminate the capabilities of the human larynx and inform the relationship between voice production and perception,” states a National Institutes of Health (NIH)grant, awarded to George Washington University. “The long term goal of this research is to inform and provide new directions for Transgender (TG) voice care, thereby improving the lives of TG people who feel their voice is a great obstacle to living as their preferred gender.”

“Incomplete gender presentation can negatively impact the TG individual’s job opportunities, relationships, and social acceptance,” the study explains.

Meanwhile:

The FAA went ahead with the furloughs on Sunday, citing the automatic budget cuts that went into effect last month. Some delays appeared in the late evening in and around New York, and according to the FAA were spreading on The FAA said in a statement that travelers can expect to see “a wide range of delays that will change throughout the day depending on staffing and weather related issues.” It cited “staffing challenges” at airports in Dallas-Fort Worth, Jacksonville, New York and Los Angeles.

“The FAA is working with the airlines throughout the day to try and minimize delays for travelers,” the statement said.

Last week, the FAA confirmed that it was going ahead with the furloughs despite testimony from the head of the Transportation Security Administration that the TSA had been able to avoid furloughs in that agency.

They are cuts that means less service - how is that hard to understand. Wait till the hayseeds find themselves with no postal delivery or agricultural funding from the feds. Luckily the rich and giant corporations taxes wont be raised...

You are too stupid to participate in this conversation. Please leave. USPS is not funded by taxpayer dollars, so why would postal delivery cease as a result of sequestration? It may, however, cease as a result of the ineptness and inefficiency of USPS.

First of all, they are not "cuts." They are % decreases to increases. They actually have more money this year than last.

Second, USPS' problems are independent of the sequester.

Last, you're a dumbass.

The Fairfax school system has being playing this game for years. They ask for $50 million dollars in increases. They get 25 million dollars more and consider that a 50% cut.

the perfect obamabot. its not that the government is bloated and waste money its that people arent paying enough taxes. you have a president that allows himself to jet off to florida to play golf at a cost of millions but not a word out of the media about this when others are told to make sacrifices.

Absolutely, but the Administration is unnecessarily and intentionally making them as painful as possible. Federal managers had more than a year to prepare for the sequestration. They didn't do a damn thing. They held their breath and crossed their fingers. With proper preparation, not a single person would have to be furloughed.

well it was obamas plan and he signed off on it so yes he is responsible. its been five years he really needs to stop blaming others for his actions. anyone that doesnt think the government waste money hasnt been inside one of their offices.

I have done contract work for the feds. I have seen receptionists that would make $35,000 in the private industry make over $100,000 in the Feds. A typical workweek for them is to show up at 10am Monday. Talk on the phone or shop online most of the day, leave at 3pm to beat rush hour. Friday is forget about it day, only contract workers show up.

I'm a Democrat and I want cuts.

Everyone around here who's worked in or for the government knows how much crap goes on as far as wasting somebody else's money. Ridiculous. Absolutely no appreciation for costs for anything. I don't care what side you sit on you should be concerned that money allocated for particular purposes is is well spent.

Senate passes bill to end FAA furloughs

Amid accusations from Republicans that the White House is politicizing the sequester at the cost of everyday travelers, the Senate passed a bill late Thursday evening designed to end the air-traffic controller furloughs that are causing delays in airports across the country.

Due to sequester cuts, the Federal Aviation Administration began furloughing air traffic controllers on Sunday, resulting in large delays for air travelers.

Republicans have spent the week lambasting President Barack Obama and his administration for creating what they say is a “phony and contrived” crisis designed to make the sequester cuts seem as disastrous as possible to Americans.

The bill would give the secretary of transportation “the flexibility to transfer certain funds to prevent reduced operations and staffing of the Federal Aviation Administration, and for other purposes,” meaning that they can cut budgets elsewhere, instead of furloughing air traffic controllers.

It passed by unanimous content, the evening before lawmakers were set to jet off to their home states for a week long recess.

I really don't get the Dem political strategy on the sequester stuff. They don't seem to understand that they'll lose every one of these battles. As they have to date.

Every time they try to roll out some cut to critical services as a way to make the impact of the sequester more visible to the public, all the Republicans have to do is point to some other much less critical function where the money could be cut and give them a way to fix the issue by reallocating money. And there's a bottomless barrel to choose from. One thing that Congress does have good insight into is where the money is since staffers are the ones who really drive money allocation via the appropriation process.

All it does is highlight how little impact there really is, how much unnecessary spending goes on, and how bad the government is at prioritizing spending.
