Church People

Hello,
I was just wondering about the motive behind the missionary church people that go from door to door handing out information. If a person follows a specific religion then why do they spend their time "promoting" the religion. Don't get me wrong I am actually glad that they came and I gave them my info but I just wanted to know their motive? and another thing how do they always stay so positive or is it almost like a part of their job?

I believe Mormons do door-to-door missionary work as part of their seminary schools while Jehovah's Witnesses do door-to-door work as "witnessing." As far as the overall "promoting" of religion, Evangelicals believe Christians should follow Paul's example and promote the Good News, or Gospel (also known as Godspell), to the masses in an effort to bring about the return of Christ sooner. To a lesser degree, Catholics do this but are more engaged in spreading the word through "good works."

Wow, I am sorry, its just hard for me to get through my head that anyone does anything just for the good of another person in N.VA, maybe its different when it comes to religion. How do they stay so "cheery" all the time or do they REALLY DEEPLY believe in everything they say and that what motivates them or is that more like part of the "job"?.

I've wondered about their motives, too. The Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses, it's part of their thing. But recently we got people from the Catholic Church, and I was willing to talk until they started criticizing other branches of religion. And it got me wondering WHAT is it that makes people want to convert others. Is it an instinctual need of some sort? Getting people to come over to our side as an evolutionary survival kind of thing? Beats the hell out of me, but it's kind of interesting to think about.

It's called "Group Think." The same bandwagon mentality that gets people to drink a trendy drink they don't really like or to spend all of their free time at kids' soccer games because everyone else does it.

It is also the same mindset that results in passengers standing in line in the aisle while a plane burns while survivors jump over the seats and live. It is the same mindset that causes parents at Little League baseball games to punch out volunteer umpires while other parents cheer. It is also the same "Group Think" that results in followers burning to death in Waco, TX and "drinking the Kool-Aid" in Guyana.

In other words, don't be afraid to think for yourself.

That's why they do it.

500 years ago they did it with a sword. Nowadays they just ring your doorbell and hand you brochures.

Do not let these freaks in your house!
There are many stories where these "missionaries" case your home and come back later and rob you blind.

Consumer asked.." How do they stay so "cheery" all the time or do they REALLY DEEPLY believe in everything they say and that what motivates them or is that more like part of the "job"?."

Its the combination of METH and REFER they consume just prior to landing in your neighborhood.

One time, a couple of religious people walked into my yard as I was out mowing. They looked all friendly and everything but, they expected me to shut down the engine.

I didn't and it was a funny conversation.

They had to yell their comments and I kept saying "what did you say"?

They tired and left.....

I'll take them anyday over the thugs walking around trying to sell magazine subscriptions. I see them get dropped off by a van with District of Colombia plates.

They hit the neighborhood trying to make people feel guilty if they don't buy. And, they do it when the wives /mothers are home alone....

So, I'll take the religious people over these guys.

Oh...and, by the way..hard to believe anyone had a catholic try to recruit them. The church can't fit the membership in Mass as it is. Its not their policy.

What motivates "missionary church people"? I agree with most of the serious comments made above. There is one additional element...the missionaries are typically young/impresionable and in the middle of a process of proving themselves to their parents...their church..their community. It is a very similar to the behavior modification process young recruits in the military are exposed to...break them down...build cohesiveness..and then go out and slay the "enemy". So in addition to the possible new convert the base of the religion is solidified.

I was somewhat surprised about the Catholic Church going door to door, and I asked if there was a priest promoting this or something. Answer: Legion of Mary, St. Veronica's in Chantilly.

Alias, you're quite the unkind one, aren't you? Does it make you feel better to insult others? Actually, don't answer that - of course it does. Yeah, I listened for a bit not just out of politeness, but because I'm often interested in looking at things from different perspectives. But when the conversation takes a tone of "That one's no good but ours is the good one," I lose patience. It's so stupid for each of these religions to think they're better than the others, that they're the "right" one. To each his own, goddammit! Whatever works best for you is the path you should take, as long as you're not hurting others.

I have to agree with ToEachHisOwn. Just because you aren't a Christian doesn't mean you need to be "un-Christian" in your response to others.

I'm not particularly religious myself. There are ways to politely tell people you aren't interested in what they are selling. I don't think I would have that kind of reaction to a tele-marketer, much less to someone calling from a church. Sounds to me like you have some deep-seeded issues that require a psychiatrist.

See, baack in the year of 2000 and 5, when we old posters founded this forum, times were hard. There were only five or six of us back then and boy, did we struggle… something these knuckleheads, like Alias, just can’t understand. We gave our lives to this forum, we sacrificed and our families suffered. We would stand outside Chutzpah deli at closing and take home the leftovers. That’s how we old school posters survived back then.
