I don't see why everyone over in the UK has their panties in a bunch over this.

At least it was real (non-rodent) meat. What more can you ask from a fast food restaurant?

Besides, horse meat is perfectly edible.

BBC reports that the meat balls served at IKEA cafeterias has horse meat in it. How the hell does horse end up in meat balls?

Beef in Europe comes from all over the EU. What happens is that in the poorer countries with more lax inspection regimes (like Poland and Spain), some criminal scumbag realizes that he can sell horse meat as beef and nobody will bother to check. Since horse meat is a lot cheaper than beef, he can make himself a few extra euros by adding a few tonnes of horse meat into the multi-tonne shipment of "beef".
