> If you are not in the freezer much, bottom mount would seem more beneficial.
My parents have a bottom mount, and it seems like a pain in the ass. I use my freezer alot and it would be annoying to have to bend over or crouch down every time I needed to get in there. Supposedly they run more efficiently but to me it just seems like a hassle. Top is better.
My mom has a bottom mount freezer. It seems like it'd be a pain in the ass to bend down to get stuff out of it. However, it's likely that people go into the refrigerator portion more often, therefore most of the time everything you want is more elevated.
I have a side mount fridge. I actually don't like it. The one big positive is that easier to divide things into categories on each shelf, otherwise it's completely way too narrow.

I have a bottom mount freeze and cant stand it. It was fine as a bachelor when there wasn't much food to put in it but now that those days are over, it completely sucks. I don't know how many times i thought the drawer was closed, left the house for a day and came back to only find it chirping and everything thawed out because bag of peas prevented a popper seal around edges allowing cold air to escape.
Because its hard organize, food is always sitting in the ice tray and ice falls to the floor when opening/closing.
Eesh - some considerations... The most popular fridge style now is the 'French door' configuration. This is a bottom mount freezer with a side-by-side fridge on top. This is the most attractive option, but also the most expensive by far ($1,700+ for stainless steel).
The next most popular styles are the bottom mount freezer and the side-by-side. I have a bottom mount and I love it. My husband hates it. Could be a guy thing. I also had a side-by-side and hated it. My husband loved it. Both types are expensive($1,500+). Our bottom mount includes an ice maker inside the freezer compartment and a cold water dispenser (which never worked) inside the fridge. The freezer has pullout drawers, which I like, but stuff can fall behind them.
The least popular style now is the top mount freezer. It is by far the least expensive option ($500+), but there are limited choices in stainless steel, if that matters to you.
BTW, if you go with stainless steel, make sure that you get a fridge with gray sides - not black. The steel/black combo is hideous. There is also a simulated stainless steel option available in some product lines. It's primary advantage is that it holds magnets (stainless steel won't).
Bottom line - if you are just looking for a low-cost utilitarian fridge and aren't concerned about style or resale value, a white or black top mount is the best choice. But if you plan on selling in the next several years, the stainless steel French door style is best.
This might be one of the most homo ekonomic topics eesh has started..
I do realize that those side freezers can be narrow. I don't want to start a new topic, or hijack this thread... butt what are y'all storing in your freezers that a side freezer can't handle besides a load of full size frozen pizzas, or a deer you done collided with?
(sorry if I'm getting too personal or behaving sexually deviant)

Alwright..
In this case, you are not requiring that a stock pile of xl pizzas lay horizontally; or a home for a bunch of oversized frozen turkeys to roost.
Don't dismiss the french door frig/freeze. Having the use of multiple shelves and bins can be an asset over the top or bottom mounts, and provide easy access to eesh of your frozen items.
I really like the double door model and would not want it any other way at this time.
(btw: the post by 'more than you want to know' made some excellent points)
