Buy a horse for the first time in Fairfax County
Posted by: first time horse buyer ()

Hi,
I wanted to buy a horse for the first time in Fairfax County... I have a pretty good credit score and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for an area where I can find an affordable horse. Any suggestions on how I should approach it? Any recommendations for an agent who has a good reputation?
Thanks!

edit by Cary: This is a cute troll thread making fun of a first-time home buyer. Moving to Off-Topic with a move notification.

What are you buying this horse for? Nothing perverted I hope.

I think most women that are into horseback riding just want something hairy and muscular between their legs.

You need a credit score of at least 750 to be a qualified horse buyer. Hope that helps!

Buying the horse is the cheap part. You can get a horse for free if you look hard enough. Lots of princesses in McLean, Great Falls, and Potomac who got horses from daddy a few years ago are no looking to be free of them now that there interest has changed.

Boarding, feeding, and maintaining the horse is where the cash is needed monthly. Unless you have a barn on your property and have at least an 1 acre of land for grazing, count on spending $450 or more per month for boarding + feed. Veterinary costs also add to that monthly costs. Plus, if you don't know anything about taking care of the horse, be prepared to pay someone to come in daily to feed and care for the horse.

You may want to look at leasing a horse first, to see if you are ready for the comittment of owning one.

Define "affordable".

Horses are also herd animals so you need two horses or a horse and donkey.

Or a mule, which is the best animal of all the equine.

Where to start:

What do you think "affordable" means? Or put it another way, how much can you afford to pay for a horse now, including financing that you have already qualified for? That should be your starting point.

Next, remember it is no longer a BUYERS MARKET. We are a long way from the glory days of the last decade but multiple offers and sales for more than listing prices are becoming more common.

Finally, you need to do your homework on the horse.

LOL. I can appreciate a good joke, even at my own expense.

Seriously though, I think the rule for horses is the same one for yachts and German automobiles: If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

Remember: location! location! location!

Do you have a long commute? Do you work from home? Think about quality of life before you buy a horse. Look at the land and zoning restrictions and yes, even the schools.

Also, see if you can qualify for a horse equity loan.

Is there a horseowner association in the potential neighborhood?

Do you have the time to be Harry (or Harriet) Horseowner? Work out your budget for horse improvement projects; they're never-ending, even if you end up buying a new horse. I could say it until I'm hoarse, but I strongly suggest you horse hunt on your own and do not succumb to pressure from sales pros.

Maybe I can help. I have 8 horses on my farm and need to downsize the herd. Gaited, Thoroughbred, Quarter, and Work horses. You don't need a credit score just cash. Prices range from $5K-$10K. They are all high quality, registered, and papered. They are cared for daily, trained and ridden at least twice a week, and have been on regular VET and Farrier care.

What kind of horse are you looking for and what do you need to do with it?

My ex-boyfriend was in a jam and I let him borrow my horse for a few days, just so he could get back and forth to work. It's been a week now and I haven't heard from him and he's not picking up his cell phone. Can the police put a tracer on my horse? I don't care about the guy, I just want my horse back.
