Polls: NRA has higher favorable rating than Obama

December 28, 2012 | 8:39 am

Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
The Washington Examiner

A new Gallup poll shows that the National Rifle Association, the target of a wave of intensely negative news coverage after the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings, still has a favorable rating of 54 percent. While down from the organization’s 60 percent favorable rating in 2005, that is still about a point higher than President Obama’s personal favorable rating.

A Huffington Post average of the president’s favorable ratings places it at 52.3 percent. That average includes favorable ratings of 49 percent in a December 16 CBS News poll, 53 percent in a December 9 Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, and 56 percent in a November 18 CNN poll.

On the NRA, Gallup found that 83 percent of Republicans give the nation’s largest pro-gun organization a favorable rating. Fifty-four percent of independents view the NRA favorably, and 36 percent of Democrats do so.

Gallup also found a difference between the public’s general favorable impression of the NRA and views on specific issues. Only 35 percent of those surveyed said the NRA expresses their views on gun issues most or all of the time. That means there is a significant part of the population that views the NRA favorably yet still disagrees with the organization from time to time.

First of all, Gallup was completely discredited in its 2012 campaign polling. See http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php/253386-Pollsters-Ranked-In-Order-Of-Accuracy-(Rasmussen-Gallup-Tied-for-24th-Out-Of-28) Or see http://themonkeycage.org/blog/2012/11/07/galluping-away-from-the-herd/ Or http://www.realclearpolitics.com/2012/10/26/gallup_party_id_figures_predict_solid_romney_win_294348.html

Gallup used to be the gold standard. Today, it's the golden stream standard.

You're also comparing apples to oranges: A averaging of surveys on Obama vs. a Gallup survey on the NRA. Oh, and if you love Gallup so much, how about Congress' approval rating--bouncing around between 10% and 18% now for months. See http://www.gallup.com/poll/158948/congress-approval-stuck-long-term-low-streak.aspx

Finally, you've got to wonder what the survey really means. A favorable rating of 54% when 65% say the NRA doesn't express their views on gun issues? Huh?

Just give Wayne LaPierre a bit of time. He'll drive the NRA's ratings through the floor.

I just checked with MSNBC. Obama has a 105% approval rating. Anything else is a lie.

Lets not forget that Gallup was saying that Romney had a 5 point led over Obama a week before the election. So I have a hard time believing any of their polls.

The NRA is made up of completely ignorant people.

The majority of Americans are completely ignorant.

It all makes perfect sense.

Yep, and I believe in the Easter Bunny. I don't believe in any polls after what was reported as "polls" in the election.

Based on that article, NPR is completely full of shit? Always? Does one polling question in one year = the totality of polls?

It's not surprising that several left-leaning pollsters 'got it right' during the last election, as they were predicting their side would win.

I'm still amazed there are people who still pick up the phone for pollsters. It's probably the same 2% or so who don't have caller ID yet (and aren't suspicious of strangers asking questions). They're also probably taking candy from strangers.

In 2008, Rasmussen was one of the most accurate ( http://blog.chron.com/txpotomac/2008/11/the-list-which-presidential-polls-were-most-accurate/ ). In 2012 they were one of the worst. What do we make of that?

Reuters, Zogby & CBS did worse than Gallup. I guess that means they're no longer reliable either.
